وَصَباand fell into youthful passion وَمَلَّand grew weary of مَقالَةَthe words of النُصّاحِthe counselors
Al-Muraʿʿath was enthralled after long feigning sobriety,
and fell into youthful passion, weary of the counselors' words.
وَأَصابَهُand struck him سِحرُthe spell of البَخيلَةِthe withholding woman بَعدَafter ماthat

And the withholding woman's spell struck him, after he had
grown accustomed to prayer and sought refuge in the rosary.
فَتَعَرَّضَتthen she presented herself لَكَto you لِلَّذيfor what حاذَرتَهُyou had feared
حَوراءُa dark-eyed woman فيin عِقدٍa necklace لَهاof hers وَوِشاحِand a sash
Then, for the very thing you feared, there appeared before you
a dark-eyed woman wearing her necklace and sash.

A tender young woman: when darkness falls, she
suffices for the maidens when a lamp is lacking.
وَلَوand if اَنَّهاthat she داوَتtreated صَدىًthirst مِنin هائِمٍa love-bewildered man

And if she treated the thirst of a love-bewildered man,
burning with thirst, watching for the water-drawer's inattention,
بِرُضابِwith the saliva of ذيone possessing أَشَرٍtooth-edge serrations أَغَرَّgleaming white كَأَنَّماas though

its wellsprings had been given apple juice at dusk,

she would quench that burning thirst and suffer no reproach;
and healing one you have enslaved with love is no sin.

Indeed, the withholding woman, if youthful longing swayed her,
would be like the date-cluster that bent over Abu al-Dahdah.

Is what you command sincere counsel? For its like
was repeated by the counselor, healing grievous torments.

إِنif كانَhe is ذاpossessed of ثِقَةٍconfidence لَهُin him بِنَجاحِin success
A man will give the physician his inherited wealth
if he is confident of success at his hands.
وَلَقَدand indeed كَلِفتُI became infatuated بِهاwith her وَعَيَّرَنيand reproached me for الهَوىlove

I was indeed enamored of her, and reproached for love
by one proffering counsel, untroubled in spirit.
فَحَلَفتُso I swore لاnot أُعطيI would give العَواذِلَthe reproaching women طاعَةًobedience
حَتّىuntil يُقامَare raised عَلَيَّover me بِالأَنواحِwith lamentations
So I swore to give the reproaching women no obedience
until lamentations are raised over me.

And when you love, nothing taunts you for your passion
but the words of others still unstricken.

And many a much-rebuked man, whose talk the base shunned,
professing skill in gallantry and jest—
نازَعتُهُI shared with him الرَيحانَsweet basil فيin نَفَسِthe breath of الضُحىthe forenoon

I shared sweet basil with him in the breath of forenoon,
and the singing of a full-hipped woman, both hands at work.

And many a flask, with enough to satisfy the drinkers,
was paired with a radiant, gazelle-like youth, freely available.

And when a boon companion complained of thirst in his head,
beside me, I quenched his thirst with wine,

from the contents of a high-spouted vessel, turbaned
with bark from a towering, spreading tree.

And when it tipped, it mimicked for your ear someone laughing
beneath the cloud, or the resonant boom of barking,

as a delicate, soft-tasting wine flowed out,
like tears, mingling its gentleness with wildness,

till I went away, having fulfilled a longing,
more bountiful than the evening visitor,

to join another woman—I had forgotten how to forget her,
for the daughters of my yearning heart refused.

like a shadow stretched crosswise on spears,

supple of neck—no sooner do I quiet his spirit
than his mettle surges in headstrong bounds—

my liver has softened toward him, and my wing grown gentle.
