Rise, my friend, and look—I see you are keen-sighted.

Do you see a caravan at palm-grown al-Rasīs?

    Departing at nightfall by al-Jafr,

swiftly—no, rather, they set out early at dawn.

Women in howdahs from the sons of ʿUqayl ibn Kaʿb,

lofty of face, large-eyed and dark-eyed.

They sleep late in curtained chambers, and wear

blended perfume when they go out in the evening to meet.

Making their dwelling along the Balīkh,

in domed tents, or returning to palaces.

At times they sought me, with necks inclined,

as eyes gaze upon a towering cloud.

They display themselves in striped cloaks to a trailing-robed gallant,

who trails youthful passion and watches the curtains.

My heart is love-crazed for them, O daughter of Masʾur,

and my patience has perished, though I was patient.

I was not kept awake by merriment, but

my night grew long because of her, though it had been short.

Indeed Suʿdā poured love upon me,

with measured calm—a weighty load from her beauty.

And whenever I sprang up, running toward her,

I was like one seeking light alongside the sun.

Do not blame Banū Salāma for what

God has firmly ordained for the young man.

The age's greatest marvel is what I harbored from her:

and it grew within my breast, though it had been small.

What love for her there was within my heart

was a burning anguish that clouded my delight.

Then it grew beyond yearning, until

it filled my heart, my breast, and my innermost self.

Like a brazier's faint fire, which you kindled,

deliberately, and it flared into radiant light.

Or like a sower's seed that found soil

that suited it, and a pool whose waters were released.

    وَكَذاكَ الصَغيرُ يَنمى كَبيرا

    It began as a glance and became death;

and thus the small grows large.

    كانَ حُبّي وَسَيرُها مَقدورا

    So may rain-clouds water a maiden, though she keeps away;

my love and her departure were ordained.

The people of al-Ghadīr departed in the glow of dawn,

so now I no longer visit al-Ghadīr.

And I see that time has passed me by, O daughter of al-Ghamr,

and left longing and copious tears.

So leave folly to the wayward, and speak of

a man who never ceases offering sighs.

If only I knew what holds back the one-eyed king

after the swine, from visiting the emir.
