He forsook the pillow and spent the night unpillowed.

And the draught of death he was led to melted him away.

Whoever sets out in the morning plunges into hardships.

O men, help against what comes at dusk and dawn!

Many a bright day have I dragged through, and many a night

Have I spent as a target for ever-returning cares.

It was as though my grief and darkness had agreed to meet

At my dwelling; each duly kept the appointment.

Their armies surged against me, so I did not sleep.

And it appeared, while they had arrived without dispersing.

Indeed, she who savaged his enemy has become

Like one absent from what you suffered, who never witnessed it.

She filled your heart; often the heart has been filled

With longing for Hamda, the like of which was never found.

When you were absorbed at heart in remembering her,

Lovesick, while she was among the daughters of the mosque.

If a sore-eyed man, unable to see clearly, caught one glimpse—

Her appearing before him would be a cure for his sore eyes.

In days when her neighbors envied her the praise

Among women—and let one like her be envied.

    [Unclear fragment]—not in her who

Joins women to him—the swaying one's passion.

Dread of loving you—yet I did not fear

Death's haste, with doom lying in ambush.

    The earth stores you away,

Lush as the swaying bough of a ban tree.

May you not be far away! Yet where is one I have parted from

Who took a path like hers and did not go far away?

Indeed, she who was your love, and now lies

Beneath the palm-leaf mats in the packed earth,

Does not hear, even if you call to her,

Your greeting; so it is with the fallen dead.

O Humayd, if you come to grief, we too

Are pledged in soul to a watering place like that.

And all people, though the distance be great,

Are a throng following in succession, all on one leading rope.

After you, I became like one wounded in the wing,

Weeping for his side when he finds no comfort,

Burning with grief, parted from his mate, borne far away by

Time, which returns to the blackness of grief.

One thing that consoles my heart after you is that I

Will be your neighbor today, Humayda, or tomorrow.

Time has run out, yet anguish for Humayda

Lies between my ribs, its heat unspent.

It reveals the heart when you recognize, within it and as its own,

A color like the inner wing-feather of a black crow.

Fair-skinned, modesty clothed her in its chastity,

Beyond the veil; when she was alone, [her door] was not shut.

So a dear companion came to you in the sepulchral grave.

O, what a dear companion you have in the niche-cut tomb!

So now I go forth at dawn—what can be without it?

It prevailed—and long yearning and numbness.

I used to recall Ubayda's radiance,

And abstain from strife of tongue and hand.

And I deem it forbidden that her place be taken

With me by anyone through friendship and affection.

And I say, as her bier is borne away that morning:

May God bless you, Umm Muhammad.

For you have left an elderly woman grieving,

And a brother in affection whose eye has not run dry.

It grew cold upon the bereaved one's liver, while now

Within me its piercing heat has not cooled.
