لَعَمريby my life لَئِنif indeed أَصبَحتَyou have become فَوقَatop مُشَذَّبٍa lopped trunk
طَويلٍtall تُعَفّيكَwear you away الرِياحُthe winds مَعَwith القَطرِthe rain
By my life, though you are now atop a lopped trunk,
By my life! If you are above a towering,
A tall one, where the winds and rain wear you away,
Long grave, winds blowing on you with rain,
لَقَدindeed عِشتَyou lived مَبسوطَoutstretched اليَدَينِboth hands مُبَرِّزاًdistinguished
وَعوفيتَand you were spared عِندَat المَوتِdeath مِنfrom ضَغطَةِconstriction القَبرِthe grave
Indeed, you lived open-handed and distinguished,
You lived with open hands, prominent,
And at death you were spared the grave's constriction.
And avoided in death the squeeze of the grave.
وَأَفلَتَّand you escaped مِنfrom ضيقِconfinement التُرابِthe earth وَغَمِّهِand its anguish
وَلَمand did not تَفقُدِyou lose الدُنياthe world فَهَلso have? لَكَyou مِنany شُكرِgratitude
And you escaped the earth's confinement and its anguish,
You escaped from the earth's narrowness and gloom
And you did not lose the world—so have you any thanks to offer?
And did not lose the world, so do you have any gratitude?
فَماso ... not تَشتَفيfind relief عَينايَmy two eyes مِنfrom دائِمِunceasing البُكىweeping
عَلَيكَfor you وَلَوand even if أَنّيthat I بَكَيتُI wept إِلىuntil الحَشرِthe Resurrection
So my eyes find no relief in ceaseless weeping
My eyes will never have their fill of constant weeping
For you, even if I were to weep until the Resurrection.
For you, even if I wept until the Resurrection.
فَطوبىso blessed لِمَنis whoever يَبكيweeps for أَخاهُhis brother مُجاهِراًopenly
وَلَكِنَّنيand yet I أَبكيI weep لِفَقدِكَfor losing you فيin سِرّيmy secrecy
So blessed is he who weeps openly for his brother,
Blessed is he who weeps for his brother openly,
But I weep for losing you in secret.
But I weep for your loss in secret.
