لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَجدىgave generously عَلَيَّto me اِبنُson of بَرمَكٍBarmak
وَماand not كُلُّeveryone مَنwho كانَwas الغِنىwealth عِندَهُin his possession يُجديgives generously
By my life, the son of Barmak has indeed been generous to me.
By my life, the son of Barmuk has done me a great service,
And not everyone who possesses wealth gives generously.
Though not all who are wealthy are helpful.
حَلَبتُI milked بِشِعريwith my verse راحَتَيهِhis two palms وَقَدand indeed رَناhe gazed
سَماحاًgenerosity كَماjust as دَرَّpoured forth السَحابُthe clouds عَلىat الرَعدِthe thunder
I milked his two palms with my verse, while he looked on,
I have milked pleasure with my poetry, though he complained -
In generosity, as clouds pour forth at thunder.
Generously, as clouds pour down on thunder.
وَثَغرٍand many a frontier كَأَفواهِlike the mouths of الأُسودِthe lions سَدَدتَهُyou sealed it

And many a frontier, like lions' mouths, you sealed
With a mouth like the maws of lions I have blocked,
With brown spears, gleaming swords, and full-grown, sleek steeds.
With dates and eggs and peeled squash.
مَقامُكَyour standing مَحمودٌpraised وَسَيبُكَand your bounty واسِعٌvast

Your standing is praised, and your bounty is vast,
Your abode is praiseworthy and your lineage is noble,
And your house's pillars are raised high by glory.
Your house lofty-pillared with glory.
مُفيدٌan acquirer of wealth وَمِتلافٌand a lavish spender سَبيلَthe course of تُراثِهِhis inheritance
إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) غَداhe went out in the morning أَوor راحَhe went out in the evening بِالجَزرِwith the ebb وَالمَدِّand the flow
He acquires and spends lavishly; his inheritance's course,
Beneficent and curator of his inheritance
Whenever he goes out at morn or eve, is ebb and flow.
Whether parting or returning with loss or gain.
سَبَقتَyou surpassed بِأيّامِthrough days of المَكارِمِnoble deeds وَالعُلاand eminence
تُراثَthe legacy of أَبٍa father نالَreceived المَكارِمَnoble virtues عَنfrom جَدِّa grandfather
You have surpassed, through days of noble deeds and eminence,
You preceded in days of generosity and sublimity
The legacy of a father who received noble virtues from a grandfather.
The legacy of a father who attained generosities from his ancestors.
أَجَعفَرُO Jaʿfar إِنَّindeed الحَمدَpraise يَبقىلِأَهلِهِendures for those worthy of it
جَمالاًas an adornment وَلاand not تَبقىendure الكُنوزُthe treasures عَلىdespite الكَدِّtoil
O Jaʿfar, praise indeed endures for those worthy of it
Ja'far, praise indeed endures for its people
As an adornment; treasures do not endure despite toil.
As beauty, and hoards do not last through striving.
فَأَطعِمso feed others وَكُلand eat مِنfrom عارَةٍa loan مُستَرَدَّةٍto be reclaimed
وَلاand do not تُبقِهاretain it إِنَّindeed العَوارِيَّborrowed things لِلرَدِّfor returning
So feed others and eat from a loan that will be reclaimed,
So feed others and eat of things recovered,
And do not retain it: borrowed things must be returned.
Do not keep them - loans are for repayment.
