Be gentle with ʿAmr when you stir up his lineage,
Be gentle with Amr when you question his lineage,
for he is an Arab made of glass vessels.
For he is an Arab of pure descent.

If his base forefathers pass muster among Muḍar,
If baseness were found in the line of his sires in Mudar,
then Bukhara’s copper coins can pass for dinars.
Then the coins of Bokhara would rank as golden dinars.

for he is a Nabataean made of dinars.
For he is a Nabatean of pure golden dinars.
