حَداurged the camels onward بَعضُهُمsome of them ذاتَtoward اليَمينِthe right وَبَعضُهُمand some of them
شِمالاًto the left وَقَلبيand my heart بَينَهُمbetween them مُتَوَزِّعُdivided
Some urged their camels to the right, and some
To the left, while my heart is torn between them.
فَوَاللَهِso, by God ماnot أَدريI know بِلَيلٍat night وَقَدand already مَضَتhave departed
حُمولُهُمُtheir laden camels أَيَّwhich of الفَريقَينِthe two groups أَتبَعُI follow
So by God, I do not know, at night, now that
Their laden camels have gone, which of the two groups to follow.
أَشارواthey gestured بِتَسليمٍwith a salutation فَجُدناso we gave freely بِأَنفُسٍwith souls
تَسيلُflow مِنfrom الآماقِthe corners of the eyes وَالسَمُّand the poison أَدمعُtears
They gestured in farewell, so we freely gave our souls,
Flowing from the corners of our eyes—and the poison is tears.
