    روحِي فَإِنَّ البَينَ تَبكيرُ

    O bird, tomorrow we too shall be birds;

depart at evening, for parting comes early.

I may seek a favor from a man on high,

with roaring and rebuff barring the way to it.

And sometimes an Iraqi woman offers me drink,

as though, unveiled, she were light.

Do not ask about all our affairs:

some of my tracks are effaced, and some are traced.

    يُطوى الخَنا وَالخَيرُ مَنشورُ

    Not everything in me earns me praise;

obscenity is folded away, while goodness is spread abroad.

And many a poet whose eye is sore because of us

for a time—no enlightenment guides him—

I told him, when his jinn roared

    and reports about him multiplied:

But for my patience, spears would stand leveled

at you, and a tanbur would sing of you.

    وَالعودُ حَيّاتٌ مَناكيرُ

    A warning has appeared for you from a well-wisher;

    a return brings fearsome serpents.

I marvel at one hastening toward my ember

when the assemblies have lent me their ears.

He hastens toward my fire, though I never summoned him:

    surely Abu Amr is chilled.

I have visited the kings of Hashim's sons,

and fair young maidens have visited me—

each a dark-eyed beauty, slender of waist,

whose maturing and dignity have enhanced her worth.

When she approaches, she is made still sweeter

by a mouth and a languorous gaze,

    and finery enriched by safflower,

like a furnace glowing in cotton cloth.

And sometimes I visit a noble brother,

in whose hands dinars come to grief.

God bless my drinking companion, Abu Wabis:

stinginess and falling short are not his way.

A young man whose cup competes with his hand

in generosity—and some people are swine.

I visited him early, groping toward his fire,

out of longing, not because houses were too narrow for me.

    كُلٌّ بِما يَصنعُ مَسرورُ

    He kept roasting me, while I drew grins from him;

each was delighted with what he did.

Until, when the whole day had passed

and a cricket had disclosed the hidden,

and in its mim a concealer startled us—

the sun's successor and a shrouding—

Abu Wabis's guest made the most of it

in winter, and the taverns stirred him.

He called the dark-eyed beauties for us, modesty upon them:

ah, how lovely those fragrant, dark-eyed beauties!

We spent the night passing them wine from Ruha,

while they lingered among us, leaning close.

They adorn the drinking company, and are themselves adorned

amid pearls whose glow the colored bands kindle.

Hollow and listening closely; when kissed,

they moaned as the mashawir moaned.

    They sing melodies of Medina

and a Meccan beat that makes them sway.

At times the flutes weep for them

in sorrow, and the lutes echo them.

And I delight in their trilling

when bass and treble strings answer one another.

Then that ended, and I did not weep for it:

vexation stole away the bliss of living.

Leave that: the radiant nobles of Hashim

are the sons of Dawud, the firebrands.

They go forth at dawn to war against its champions,

proud men when the cowards are afraid.

    إِلَيهِمُ تُلقي الجَماهيرُ

    By bounty, a band among them are lords;

    to them the multitudes yield.

Tell the misguided who seek to attain their reach:

swift steeds cannot overtake the wind.

How many a noble man of Hashim's sons,

through whom well-being and goodness are bestowed!

Sovereignty belongs to Abbas and his sons

from of old; swine belong in the privy.

Such as Sulayman—and who is his equal

amid battle, with the sword unsheathed?

    لا يَستَميهِ العَسكَرُ الخورُ

    Two halves: one generosity, one might;

the faint-hearted army cannot hunt him down.

In his breast is forbearance, and within his armor

a lion, with the crown fastened upon him.

The bright swords rejoice in meeting him

at times, and the pulpits strut with pride.

They gnaw at a master guide, generosity upon him,

like a mantle when its woven pattern is complete.

His giving is a flood, and his promise

earns sweet praise; his countenance is victorious.

    وَلَيسَ مِنهُ الكَلِمُ العورُ

    He exhausts wealth, yet preserves good sense;

no defective words come from him.

    تَحُفُّهُ الشُمُّ المَغاويرُ

    Praise has been measured to fit his face;

    lofty, valiant warriors surround him.

By God, I have nothing but his kindness,

and the righteous king is duly honored.

    يَقري بِهِ جودٌ وَتَبكيرُ

    His health is like water in its swelling flood;

through it, generosity and promptness offer hospitality.

So he distressed my enviers, and I adorned him

with praise, for praise is adornment.

Sulayman has adorned the sons of Hashim

as bracelets adorn a young maiden.

From his forbearance comes forbearance, and from his resolve

resolve; from his favors comes ease.

A striker of necks, and their liberator:

his sword is musk and heart's blood.

With generosity he erases his brothers' stinginess,

and fate's decrees wipe away sin.
