أَلاListen! قُلtell لِتِلكَto that المالِكِيَّةِthe woman of Malik أَصحِبيbe companionable
وَإِلّاand if not فَمَنّيناthen give us hope لِقاءَكِmeeting you وَاِكذِبيand lie
Listen, tell that woman of Malik: keep me company;
otherwise, give us hope of meeting you, and lie.
عِديناpromise us فَإِنَّfor indeed النَفسَthe soul تُخدَعُis deceived بِالمُنىby hopes
وَقَلبُand the heart الفَتىof a young man كَالطائِرِlike a bird المُتَقَلِّبِever turning
Promise us, for the soul is deceived by hopes,
and a young man's heart is like a restless bird.
وَقَدand perhaps تَأمَنيyou trust مَنone who لاnot يَزالُceases مُباعِداًkeeping his distance
عَلىdespite قُربِthe nearness of مَنone who يَدنوapproaches بِسَهلٍwith ease وَمَرحَبِand welcome
And you may trust one who always keeps his distance,
despite the nearness of one who approaches with ease and welcome.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لَوif تَجفوكَshe shuns you أُمٌّa mother قَريبَةٌclose
تَجافَيتَyou would turn away عَنهاfrom her لِلبَعيدِto the distant one المُقَرِّبِwho draws you close
For if a mother close to you were to shun you,
you would turn from her to a distant one who draws you close.
إِذاwhen يَئِسَتdespairs نَفسُthe soul اِمرِىءٍof a man مِنof قَريبَةٍa woman close to him
تُبَدَّلَis substituted أُخرىanother woman مَركَباًas a mount بَعدَafter مَركَبِa mount
When a man's soul despairs of a woman close to him,
another is put in her place, mount after mount.
فَلاso do not تُمسِكينيhold me بِالهَوانِin humiliation فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
عَنِaway from الهوَنِhumiliation ظَعّانٌever departing لِقَصدِbound for المُلَحَّبِthe well-trodden road
So do not hold me in humiliation, for I
leave humiliation behind, bound for the well-trodden road.
حَبَستُI confined عَلَيكَto you النَفسَthe soul حَولَينِfor two years لاnot أَرىI see
نَوالاًa favor وَلاand no وَعداًa promise بِنَيلٍby fulfillment مُعَقَّبِfollowed up
I kept my soul bound to you for two years, seeing no
favor, nor a promise followed by fulfillment.
وَماand not كُنتُI was لَوif شَمَّرتُI girded myself أَوَّلَthe first ظاعِنٍdeparting traveler
بِرَحلِيَwith my saddle عَنfrom جَدبٍbarren ground إِلىto غَيرِother than مُجدِبِbarren
Had I girded myself, I would not have been the first to depart
with my saddle from barren ground to land not barren.
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I أُغضيI close جُفوناًeyelids عَلىover القَذاthe grit
وَأَحفَظُand I guard ماwhat حَمَّلتَنيyou charged me with فيin المُغَيَّبِabsence
But I close my eyelids over the grit,
and guard what you entrusted to me in your absence.
وَأَنتِand you بِماfor all that قَرَّبتِنيyou drew me close وَاِصطَفَيتِنيand chose me
خَلاءٌempty وَقَدand indeed باعَدتِنيyou kept me distant بُعدَthe distance of مُذنِبِan offender
And you, for all that you drew me close and chose me,
are empty of that, and have kept me far off like an offender.
كَقائِلَةٍlike a woman saying إِنَّindeed الحِمارَthe donkey فَنَحِّهِso keep it away
عَنِfrom القَتِّthe alfalfa أَهلُworthy of السِمسِمِthe sesame المُتَهَذِّبِrefined
Like a woman saying: the donkey—so keep it
away from alfalfa—is worthy of refined sesame.
وَماand not الحُبُّlove إِلّاexcept صَبوَةٌinfatuation ثُمَّthen دَنوَةٌcloseness
إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنit is كانَwas الهَوىpassion رَوغَthe dodging of ثَعلَبِa fox
And love is only infatuation, then closeness;
if it is not so, passion is a fox's dodging.
