يَقولونَthey say فيin أُنثىone woman مِنfor أنثىanother woman خَليفَةٌa substitute
يَقولونَ في أُنثى مِن أنثى خَليفَةٌ
وَقَدand indeed كَذَبواthey have lied بَعضُsome of الأَوانِسِthe maidens نَيرَبُa malicious gossip
وَقَد كَذَبوا بَعضُ الأَوانِسِ نَيرَبُ
They say one woman can take another’s place;
Yet they have lied: some maidens are malicious gossips.
وَقَدand indeed كانَthere was ليfor me فيهِنَّamong them داعيa call of قَرابَةٍkinship
وَقَد كانَ لي فيهِنَّ داعي قَرابَةٍ
وَلَكِنbut ذَواتُwomen possessing الوُدِّaffection أَدنىnearer وَأَقرَبُand closer
وَلَكِن ذَواتُ الوُدِّ أَدنى وَأَقرَبُ
And among them I had the call of kinship;
But affectionate women are nearer and closer.
