لاno فَجعَbereavement إِلّاexcept كَماas فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِهِby his loss
مِنof فارِسٍa horseman كانَwas دونَناin our defense حَدِباsolicitous
No grief compares with what I suffered in losing him,
No grief except as I grieved for him
a horseman who guarded us with devoted care.
A horseman who was graceful among us
ياoh صَفَحهُhis forbearance عَنfrom جَوابِanswering جاهِلِناour fool
حِلماًout of forbearance وَياand oh عِزَّهُhis might إِذاwhen غَلَباhe prevailed
Oh, his refraining from answering our fool,
O you who pardon the ignorance of fools
out of forbearance—and oh, his might when he prevailed!
With forbearance, and o you whose might prevails when the battle is joined
وَياand oh قِراهُhis hospitality العَدُوَّthe enemy مُرهَفَةًkeen-edged
بيضاًwhite blades وَياand oh لينَهُhis gentleness إِذاwhen صَحِباhe kept company
And oh, his hospitality to the enemy: keen-edged
O you whose enemy's abodes are left desolate
white blades! And oh, his gentleness when he kept company!
As well as o you whose softness companions find when they draw near
وَياand oh جَداهُhis bounty لِمَنto whoever أَلَمَّcame visiting بِهِto him
يَوماًone day وَياand oh وَصلَهُhis friendship لِمَنto whoever قَرُباdrew near
And oh, his bounty to whoever came to him
O you who pains those who injured him
one day—and oh, his friendship with whoever drew near!
One day, and o you who joins those who come close
لَوif نالَattained خُلداًimmortality مِنfrom قَبلِهِbefore him أَحَدٌanyone
مَدَّتwould have stretched إِلىtoward الخُلدِimmortality كَفُّهُhis hand سَبَباa cord
Had anyone before him attained immortality,
If anyone before had attained immortality
his hand would have stretched a cord toward immortality.
His hands would have provided the means to immortality
