خَيرُ إِخوانِكَ المُشارِكُ في المُر
رِcompletes 'bitter hardship' وَأَينَand where الشَريكُthe partner فيin المُرِّbitter hardship أَيناwhere
رِ وَأَينَ الشَريكُ في المُرِّ أَينا
The best of your brothers is the one who shares bitter hard—
The best of your brothers is he who shares in bitter hardship;
—ships. And where is a partner in adversity—where?
and where, oh where, is a partner in bitter hardship?
الَّذيwho إِنif شَهِدتَyou are present سَرَّكَhe gladdens you فيamong الحَيـthe tribe (word continues)
الَّذي إِن شَهِدتَ سَرَّكَ في الحَيـ
ـيِcompletes 'the tribe' وَإِنand if غِبتَyou are absent كانَhe is أُذناًan ear وَعَيناand an eye
ـيِ وَإِن غِبتَ كانَ أُذناً وَعَينا
The one who, when you are present, delights you within the commu—
Who, when you are present, gladdens you among the tribe,
—nity, and when you are absent, serves as your ear and eye.

مِثلَlike حُرِّpure الياقوتِruby إِنif مَسَّهُtouches it الناthe fire (word continues)
مِثلَ حُرِّ الياقوتِ إِن مَسَّهُ النا
رُcompletes 'the fire' جَلاهُpolishes it البَلاءُthe ordeal فَاِزدادَso it grows زَيناin beauty
رُ جَلاهُ البَلاءُ فَاِزدادَ زَينا
Like the purest ruby: if fi—
Like a pure ruby: if fire touches it,
—re touches it, ordeal burnishes it, and it grows lovelier.

أَنتَyou فيamong مَعشَرٍa group of people إِذاwhen غِبتَyou are absent عَنهُمfrom them
أَنتَ في مَعشَرٍ إِذا غِبتَ عَنهُم
بَدَّلواthey turn كُلَّall ماthat which يَزينُكَadorns you شَيناdisgrace
بَدَّلوا كُلَّ ما يَزينُكَ شَينا
You are among a company who, whenever you are absent from them,
You are among people who, when you are absent from them,
turn everything that adorns you into a blemish.
turn all that graces you into disgrace.
وَإِذاand when ماemphatic particle رَأَوكَthey see you قالواthey say جَميعاًall together
وَإِذا ما رَأَوكَ قالوا جَميعاً
أَنتَyou مِنamong أَكرَمِmost honored الرِجالِthe men عَلَيناin our eyes
أَنتَ مِن أَكرَمِ الرِجالِ عَلَينا
Yet whenever they see you, they all declare,
And when they see you, they all say,
“To us, you are among the noblest of men.”
"You are among the men we honor most."
ماnot أَرىI see لِلأَنامِamong humankind وُدّاًaffection صَحيحاًgenuine
ما أَرى لِلأَنامِ وُدّاً صَحيحاً
عادَhas become كُلُّall الأَنامِhumankind زوراًfalsehood وَمَيناand deceit
عادَ كُلُّ الأَنامِ زوراً وَمَينا
I see no genuine affection among humankind;
I see no genuine affection among humankind;
all humankind has become falsehood and lies.
