    إِنَّ الكَريمَ أَحَقُّ بِالتَفضيلِ

    And Nafi‘ excels his peers in merit;

    Indeed, the generous man most deserves distinction.

    O Nafi‘, whose gifts helped when there blew against one another

    The raging winds, followed by downpours.

    You resembled ‘Uqbah without striving to imitate him,

    And you grew up amid forbearance and gracious reception.

    And you governed among us for months, sparing us

    The hardship caused by the suspect and deceit’s stealthy theft.

    You are called Hilal in this age, and Nafi‘,

    And Salm—how fine the ancestry of the man we look to!
