وَكَيفَand how يَخِفُّgrow light ليfor me بَصَريmy sight وَسَمعيand my hearing
وَكَيفَ يَخِفُّ لي بَصَري وَسَمعي
وَحَوليand around me عَسكَرانِtwo armies مِنof الثِقالِburdensome people
وَحَولي عَسكَرانِ مِن الثِقالِ
And how can my sight and hearing be unburdened,
How can my sight and hearing be concealed from me
With two armies of bores around me,
When around me are two hosts of burdensome men,
قُعوداًseated حَولَaround دَسكَرَتيmy country house وَعِنديand beside me
قُعوداً حَولَ دَسكَرَتي وَعِندي
كَأَنَّas though لَهُمto them عَلَيَّupon me فُضولَsurplus مالِmoney
كَأَنَّ لَهُم عَلَيَّ فُضولَ مالِ
Seated around my country house and beside me,
Sitting around my household, and with me,
As though I owed them surplus money?
As if they had some rightful claim upon me.

Whenever I wish, Hilal calls on me in the morning,
Whenever I please, the crescent moon salutes me,
And who among people is more burdensome than Hilal?
Yet which of men is more burdensome than the crescent?
