رَهينَةَ عامٍ في الدِنانِ وَعامِ
And a clear, delicate wine that dazzles the eyes,
With clear wine the eyes grow tender in the evening
Held captive in wine-jars for a year and another year.
Captive to a year in pots and a year in cups
أَدَرناwe passed around بِهاwith it الكَأسَthe cup الرَوِيَّةَbrimming بَينَناamong us

مِنَ اللَيلِ حَتّى اِنجابَ كُلُّ ظَلامِ
We passed the brimming cup of it among us,
We passed the brimming cup between us through the night
Through the night, until all darkness lifted.
Until all darkness took flight and fled away

مِنَ العِيِّ نَحكي أَحمدَ بنَ هِشامِ

In our halting speech, to resemble Ahmad ibn Hisham.
We told, of madness, the tale of Ahmad ibn Hisham
