أَلاAh! ياO اِسقِيانيgive me drink, you two بِالرَحيقِwith pure wine فَنيتُI have wasted away
وَلَوand if بَقِيَتshe had remained حُبّىHubba لَناwith us لَبَقيتُI would have remained
Ah, you two, give me pure wine to drink; I have wasted away.
And had Hubba remained with us, I too would have remained.
أَرىI see سَقَميmy sickness يَزدادُincreases مِنbecause of أُمِّUmm (mother of) مالِكٍMalik
وَلوand if ذُقتُI tasted يَوماًone day ريقَهاher saliva لَبَريتُI would have recovered
I see my sickness worsening because of Umm Malik;
And had I one day tasted her saliva, I would have been cured.
أَظَلُّI spend the day كَأَنّيas though I شارِبٌone who has drunk سُمَّvenom of حَيَّةٍa serpent
وَيَعتادُنيand haunts me الوَسواسُobsessive thoughts حينَwhen أَبيتُI spend the night
I spend the day as though I had drunk a serpent's venom,
And obsessive thoughts haunt me when I lie down at night.
فَسُبحانَso glory be to رَبّيmy Lord لاno جَلادَةَendurance بَعدَماafter
جَرَيتُI have run وَأَبلانيand has worn me out الهَوىpassion فَبَليتُso I have wasted away
So glory be to my Lord! No endurance remains after
I have run, and passion has worn me out, so I have wasted away.
ظَمِئتُI thirsted فَلَمbut did not أَظمَأI thirst إِلىfor بَردِthe coolness of مَشرَبٍa drink
وَلَكِنbut rather إِلىfor وَجهِthe face of الحَبيبِthe beloved ظَميتُI thirsted
I thirsted, but did not thirst for the coolness of a drink;
Rather, I thirsted for the beloved's face.
وَقَدand indeed وَعَدَتناshe promised us نائِلاًa favor ثُمَّthen أَخلَفَتshe broke her promise
وَقالَتand she said لَناto us يَومَon the day of الفِراقِparting نَسيتُI forgot
And she had promised us a favor, then broke her promise,
And told us on the day of parting, 'I forgot.'
فَماyet not إِنat all (emphatic) سَقَتناshe gave us to drink شَربَةًa sip مِنof رُضابِهاher saliva
وَلَوand if فَعَلَتshe did so ماتَwould have died الهَوىpassion وَرَضيتُand I would have been content
Yet she did not give us even a sip of her saliva;
And had she done so, passion would have died, and I would have been content.
