أَلاAh! ياO نَفَسَbreath of المِسكِmusk الwhich (first part)
لَذيwhich (completion) يُخلَطُis mixed بِالعَنبَرwith ambergris
Ah, O breath of musk,
O soul, the sweet musk mixed with ambergris
which is mingled with ambergris!
May God cure you from a person
شَفاكَmay He heal you اللَهُGod مِنof (descriptive) شَخصٍa person
عَلىregarding ميعادِكَyour promised meeting الأَعسَرmost difficult
May God heal you—what a person,
Who misses your difficult appointment
so difficult about your promised meeting!
Breaking promises while coming and going
تَشينُyou mar الوَعدَthe promise بِالخُلفِby breaking it
وَأَنتَand you المُقبِلُone who approaches المُدبِرone who turns away
You mar your promise by breaking it,
Your words to me bring no joy
and you draw near, then turn away.
Except an intoxicating sweetness
وَماand not قَولُكَyour saying لِيَto me أُرضيI will please
And your saying to me, 'I will please
With which you enchant some people
you,' is nothing but intoxicating sugar.
While a glance of the eye is enchanted
بِهِwith it تَسحَرُyou bewitch أَقواماًgroups of people
وَعَينٌand an eye طَرفُهاits glance يَسحَرbewitches
With it you bewitch people,
Do you not remember my wishes
and an eye whose glance enchants.
That I wished from you? Yes, remember!
أَماdo you not? تَذكُرyou remember ماwhat مَنَّيmade ... hope (verb stem)
تَنيyou ... me (verb ending) مِنكَfrom you بَلىyes indeed فَاِذكُرthen remember
Do you not recall what you made
I am neither forgetful, nor heedless, nor negligent
me hope for from you? Yes—then remember.
Your face reminded me of the brightest full moon
فَإِنّيfor indeed I لَستُI am not بِالساليone who has ceased longing
وَلاnor الناسيone who forgets وَلاnor المُقصِرone who gives up
For I have not ceased longing,
And your walking to the soft, yellow sand dunes
nor forgotten, nor given up.
You deliberately wipe out my traces
لَقَدindeed ذَكَّرَنيreminded me وَجهُface
كَyour وَجهَthe face of القَمَرِthe moon الأَزهَرradiant
Indeed, your face has reminded me
With the dragging of skirts and anklets
of the radiant moon's face,
And God’s covenant and pact
وَمَمشاكَand your walk إِلىtoward الدِعصِthe sand dune الthe
رُكامِheaped up اللَيِّنِsoft الأَعفَرdust-colored
and of your walk toward the sand dune,
Between the veil and the pulpit
heaped up, soft, and dust-colored.
And sometimes our pastime
تُعَفّيyou erase أَثَريmy tracks عَمداًdeliberately
بِجَرِّby dragging المَرطِthe mantle وَالقَرقَرand the gown
You deliberately erase my tracks
Unlike the illuminated night talk
by dragging the mantle and gown.
I did not forget, but now I do not remember
وَعَهدِand by the pledge of اللَهِGod وَالميثاand the covenant (first part)
قِcovenant (completion) بَينَbetween السِترِthe curtain وَالمِنبَرand the pulpit
And by God's pledge and the covenant
Will that return to me as it was?
between the curtain and the pulpit,
I have been silent about injustice
وَمَلهىًand delight بِكَwith you أَحياناًat times
خِلافَbehind السَمُرِthe acacias المُقمَرmoonlit
and delight with you at times
Just to meet you, but how I fell short!
behind the moonlit acacias.
I do not envy your beauty
وَإِنّيand indeed I كُنتُI used to لاnot أَنسىI forget
فَقَدthen indeed أَصبَحتُI have become لاnot أَذكُرI remember
And I once did not forget;
Rather, I envy the gown
yet now I no longer remember.
O light of my eyes that I used to see with
فَهَلso, will ...? يَرجِعُreturn ليto me ذاكَthat
كَماas كانَit was فَلاso not أَفتُرI flag
Will that, then, return to me
When you are absent, I do not hear, nor see, nor blink
as it was, so that I do not flag?
Nothing remains of the agony of your love
لَقَدindeed صُمتُI fasted عَنfrom الجَورِinjustice
لِأَلقاكَso that I may meet you فَماyet not أَقصَرit relented
I have indeed fasted from injustice,
In my heart and innermost being
to meet you, yet it has not relented.
Blind beneath the wing of night
وَماand not أَحسُدُكَI envy you الحُسنَbeauty
ولَكِنand yet أَحسُدُI envy المِئزَرthe waistcloth
And I do not envy you your beauty,
That does not excuse or fall short
but I envy the waistcloth.
I fear death from longing
أَلاAh! ياO نورَlight of عَينَيَّmy two eyes الَّذيwhich
كُنتُI used to بِهِthrough it أَنظُرI see
Ah, O light of my eyes, through which
And with patience, I cannot be patient
I used to see!
So neither alive, nor dead
إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) غَبتَyou are absent لَمnot أَغفُI doze
وَلَمand not أَسمَعI hear وَلَمand not أُبصِرI see
Whenever you are absent, I do not doze,
But in the state of burning embers
nor hear, nor see.
فَماso what بيis in me مِنfrom جَوىburning anguish of حُبِّlove
كَfor you فيin الأَحشاءِthe entrails وَالأَبهَرand the aorta
What I suffer from the burning ache of love
for you in my entrails and aorta
عَمىًblindness تَحتَbeneath جَناحِthe wing of اللَيthe night (first part)
لِnight (completion) لاnot يُعفيit spares وَلاnor يُقصِرit relents
is blindness beneath the wing of night,
which neither spares nor relents.
أَخافُI fear المَوتَdeath بِالشَوقِfrom longing
وَبِالصَبرِand from patience فَلاso not أَصبِرI endure patiently
I fear death from longing,
and from patience, so I cannot be patient.
فَلاso neither حَيٌّalive وَلاnor مَيتٌdead
وَلَكِنand yet مَوقِفُthe position of الأَشعَرal-Ashʿar
So I am neither alive nor dead,
but in al-Ashʿar's predicament.
