أَلاah! ياO! حَبَّذاhow delightful! وَاللَby God (continued)
هِcompletion of 'God' مَنthe one whom حَمَّلتُهُI made him bear وُدّيmy love
Ah, how delightful—by God—
Oh, how blessed and modest is he
is the one I have entrusted with my love.
Whom I have cherished with my love
أُحِبُّI love الوَعدَthe promise مِنfrom فيهِhis mouth
وَإِنand even if لَمnot يوفِhe fulfills بِالعَهدِthe pledge
I love the promise from his mouth,
I love the promise from his mouth
even if he does not keep the pledge.
Even if he doesn’t keep his word
حَبيبٌa beloved قُربُهُhis nearness الخُلدُeternal life
وَأَنّىand how لَكَfor you بِالخُلدِwith eternal life
A beloved whose nearness is eternal life—
A beloved whose nearness is eternity
yet how can you attain eternal life?
But how can you attain eternity?
كَأَنّيas though I فيin الهَوىlove جَهداًhardship
وَقَدand already زادَit has increased عَلىbeyond الجَهدِhardship
As though, in love, I were hardship itself,
It's as if with passion I'm exhausted
and it has gone beyond hardship.
Yet surpassing exhaustion he remains
تَرىyou see مِنّيwithout me لَهُfor him بُدّاًa means of doing without
وَماand not ليfor me مِنهُwithout him مِنany بُدِّmeans of doing without
You see that he can do without me,
You see me completely devoted to him
yet I cannot do without him.
And I cannot turn away at all
فَمَنso who يُنصِفُنيwill obtain justice for me مِنهُagainst him
عَلىdespite ماwhat بيails me لَهُfor him مُدّيmy mudd (a measure)
Who, then, will win me justice against him?
Who then can judge me against him
For all that ails me, his is my measure
Despite how much I've given to him

Musk - for musk among fragrances

Is what I prefer and frequent
فَلَوso if بِتناwe spent the night بِهِwith him لَيلاًfor a night
مَعَamong الأَسفاطِthe caskets وَالوَردِand the roses
If we spent a night with him,
If we would spend a night together
among the caskets and roses,
With wine and roses and the like
قَضَيناwe satisfied حاجَةَthe need النَفسِof the soul
وَلَمand not نُصبِحwe enter the morning عَلىin وَجدِlonging
we would satisfy the soul's need
We'd fulfill our souls desire
and would not awaken in longing.
And not wake feeling melancholy
