ثَقُلَتhas grown heavy مُوَدَّتُكُمyour affection عَلىupon ظَهريmy back
O ʿUbayd, whose love is scant,
your affection weighs upon my back.
لَوif كُنتِyou were ياO عَبّادَʿAbbād صادِقَةًtruthful
بِالحُبِّin love قارَبَwould approach أَمرُكُمyour state أَمريmy state
If you, O ʿAbbād, were true
in love, your state would draw close to mine.
طُوِّقتِyou were girded with صَبراًpatience عَنin abstaining from زِيارَتِناvisiting us

You were girded with patience to forgo visiting us,
but my patience for not seeing you dwindles.

My eye hopes to find its solace in you,
and wealth for itself from within poverty.

You are the soul's desire when it is alone,
and its conversation in hardship and ease.
فَتَحَرَّجيso refrain from sin إِنif كُنتِyou are مُؤمِنَةًa believer

بِاللَهِin God ياO عَبّادَʿAbbād مِنfrom هَجريforsaking me
So scrupulously refrain, if you are one who believes
in God, O ʿAbbād, from forsaking me.
لَوif تَعلَمينَyou knew بِماof what لَقيتُI suffered بِكُمbecause of you
لَفَدَيتِنيyou would surely ransom me بِالرَحمِwith blood kinship وَالصِهرِand marriage ties
If you knew what I have suffered through you,
you would ransom me with ties of blood and marriage.

Nor would you withhold a cooling draught
of saliva from a sweet mouth with cool, gleaming teeth.
جَمجَمتُI concealed حُبَّكِlove for you لاnot أَبوحُI reveal بِهِof it
سَنَتَينِtwo years فيin حَقرٍhumiliation وَفيand in سَترِconcealment
I concealed my love for you, not revealing it,
for two years in humiliation and secrecy,
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen الكِتمانُconcealment أَورَثَنيbequeathed me
سُقماًsickness وَضاقَand grew tight بِحُبِّكُمwith love for you صَدريmy breast
until, when concealment had bequeathed me
sickness, and my breast grew tight with love for you,
عَنَّيتُI tormented نَفساًa soul غَيرَnot آمِنَةٍsafe
فيin غَيرِother than فاحِشَةٍindecency وَلاand no هُجرِfoul speech
I tormented a soul that knew no safety,
without indecency or foul speech.
أَشهىmore desirable لِنَفسيto my soul لَوif أُثَقِّلُهاI burden it
وَلِماand to what بِهاis within it مِنthan لَيلَةِthe Night of القَدرِDecree
You are more desirable to my soul, were I to burden it,
and to all within it, than the Night of Decree.
أَهذيI rave بِكُمabout you يَقظانَawake قَدindeed عَلِمواthey know

I rave about you awake—they know it—
and spend the night longing at the thought of you,
وَتَقَلَّبينَand you turn about وَأَنتِwhile you are لاهِيَةٌcarefree
فيin الخَزِّsilk-and-wool cloth وَالقوهِيِّand Qūhī fabric وَالعِطرِand perfume
while you turn about, carefree,
amid silk-and-wool cloth, Qūhī fabrics, and perfume.
أَعُبَيدَO ʿUbayd هَلّاwhy not تَذكُرينَyou remember فَتىًa young man
تَيَّمتِهِyou enslaved him بِحَديثكِwith your speech السِحرِmagic
O ʿUbayd, will you not remember a young man
whom you enslaved with your bewitching talk?
لِلمَوتِdeath has أَسبابٌcauses وَحُبُّكُمُand your love
سَبَبٌa cause لِمَوتيfor my death مُحصَدُtightly bound الشَزرِthe reverse twist
Death has its causes, and your love
is a cause of my death, a tightly twisted cord.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَلِمتُI have learned سَبيلَthe way to عِلَّتِكُمyour affliction
فيماwhile يَحِنُّyearns لِغَيرِكُمfor someone other than you ظُفريmy nail
Indeed, I have learned the way to your affliction,
while my nail yearns for someone other than you.
فَفَلَلتُso I blunted كَفّيmy hand عَنaway from مساءَتِكُمharming you
فَظَلِلتُso I remained واضِعَهاresting it عَلىupon سَحريmy chest
So I blunted my hand to keep it from harming you,
and kept it resting upon my chest,
طَمَعاًin longing إِلَيكِfor you بِماfor what أُؤمِّلُهُI hope for it
وَمَخافَةًand in fear أَنthat تَقطعيyou cut off عُذريmy excuse
in longing for you, for what I hope for,
and fearing you would cut off my excuse,
لِصَريمَةٍbecause of a firm resolve غَلَبَتovercame مُواصَلَتيmy attempts at union
وَمَوَدَّةٍand an affection زادَتincreased عَلىbeyond وَفريmy means
because of a firm resolve that overcame my attempts at union,
and an affection that exceeded my means.
إِنَّindeed المُحِبّينَthe lovers الَّذينَwhose هَفَتfluttered
أَحلامُهُمtheir reason لِعَواقِدِtoward women who tie الخُمرِthe veils
Indeed, the lovers whose
reason fluttered toward women who knot their veils
أَمَلواthey hoped وَخافواand feared مِنfrom حَياتِهِمُtheir lives
وَعراًrough terrain فَماso not وَأَلواthey escaped مِنَfrom الوَعرِthe rough terrain
hoped, and feared that their lives held
rough terrain—and never escaped that rough terrain.
نَزَلواthey descended بِواديinto the valley of المَوتِdeath إِذwhen عَشِقواthey fell in love
فَتَتابَعواthen they followed one another شَفعاًin pairs عَلىafter وَترِa single one
They descended into the valley of death when they fell in love,
then followed one another, in pairs after single ones.
وَكَذاكِand likewise مِنfrom واديthe valley of وَفائِهِمُtheir fidelity
أَصبَحتُI have become مُجتَنِحاًinclining عَلىon سَفرِa journey
And likewise, from the valley of their fidelity,
I have come to lean forward on a journey,
ماضٍgoing onward وَمُرتَهَنٌand held in pledge بِدائِهِمُby their malady
فَنُفوسُهُمso their souls لِلِقائِهِمtoward meeting them تَجريrun
going onward, held in pledge by their malady;
so their souls race to meet them.
ياO صاحِfriend لاdo not تَعجَلhasten بِمَعذِلَتيto reproach me
سَتَبيتُyou will pass the night مِنof أَمريmy plight عَلىin خُبرِknowledge
O friend, do not hasten to reproach me;
you will pass the night knowing my plight.
وَاِعرِفand know بِقَلبيof my heart حينَwhen تَذكُرُهُyou recall it
أَنthat يُستَهامَit is enthralled بِبَيضَةِby the egg-white maiden of الخِدرِthe secluded chamber
And know of my heart, when you recall it,
that it is enthralled by the chamber's egg-white maiden.
إِنَّindeed الهَوىlove جَثَمَتcrouched عَقارِبُهُits scorpions
فيهِwithin it جُثومَthe crouching of الفَرخِa nestling فيin الوَكرِthe nest
Love's scorpions have crouched
within it, as a nestling crouches in its nest,
يَومَthe day العَذارىthe maidens يَستَطِفنَcircle بِهاaround her
مِثلَlike النُجومِthe stars يَطُفنَthey circle بِالبَدرِaround the full moon
on the day the maidens circled her
like stars circling the full moon.
لَمdid not أَنسَهاI forget her أُصُلاًin late afternoons وَقَدand already رَكِبَتhad entered
شَمسُthe sun of النَهارِdaytime لأَرذَلِto the most decrepit stage of العُمرِlife
I have not forgotten her in late afternoon, when
the day's sun had entered life's most decrepit age,
وَدُموعُهاand her tears مِمّاfrom what تُسِرُّshe conceals بِناconcerning us
تَجريflow عَلىover الخَدَّينِthe two cheeks وَالنَحرِand the upper chest
and her tears, from what she concealed about us,
flowed over her cheeks and upper chest.
فَاِغتالَthen stealthily slew ذَلِكُمُall that وَغَيَّرَهُand changed it
عَصرٌan age تَناسَخَهاpassed her onward إِلىto عَصرِanother age
Then all that was stealthily slain and changed
by an age that passed her onward to another age,

دانٍdrawing near مِنَto المَعروفِthe familiar بِالنُكرِwith strangeness
and the whiteness of a day after its night,
drawing near to the familiar with strangeness.
أَنكَرتُI failed to recognize ماwhat قَدpreviously كُنتُI used to أَعرِفُهُrecognize it
مِنهاof her سِوىexcept المَوعودِwhat was promised وَالغَدرِand betrayal
What I once knew I no longer recognized
in her, except promises and betrayal.
وَالنَفسُand the soul دانِيَةٌdrawing near بِمَلَّتِهاwith its burning embers
مِنهاto her تُطيفُcircles بِهاaround it اِبنَةَthe daughter of الدَهرِTime
And the soul draws near, with its burning embers,
to her; the daughter of Time circles it.
إِنّيindeed I لأَخشىsurely fear مِنfrom تَذَكُّرِهاremembering her
مَوتَthe death of الفُجاءَةِsuddenness حَيثُwhen لاnot أَدريI know
I truly fear, from remembering her,
sudden death when I am unaware,
مِنfrom خَفقَةٍa palpitation لَوif دامَlasted عارِضُهاits bout
قَدرَfor the span of الفَواقِa brief milking-pause وَفىwould be spent لَهاon it عُمريmy life
from a palpitation whose bout, if it lasted
a brief pause in milking, would exhaust my life.
لَكِنbut تَأَخَّرَwas delayed يَومُthe day of مُرتَهَنٍone held in pledge
بِوَفاتِهِto his death فَوَعاso he kept his senses عَلىdespite كَسرِbrokenness
But delayed was the day of one held in pledge
to his death; he kept his senses despite being broken.
فَلَتَنزِلَنَّso it will surely descend بِهِupon him الَّتيthat which نَزَلَتdescended
يَوماًone day بِصاحِبِupon the companion of عُروَةَʿUrwah العُذريal-ʿUdhrī
Yet surely there will befall him what befell
one day the companion of ʿUrwah al-ʿUdhrī.
فَإِذاso if سَمِعتِyou hear بَمَيِّتٍof one dead حَزَناًfrom grief
بَكَرَcame early الحِمامُdeath بِهِfor him وَلَمand did not يَسرِtravel by night
So if you hear of someone dead from grief,
for whom Death came early, not journeying by night,
فَاِبكيthen weep عَلىover قَبريmy grave مُفَجَّعَةًstricken with grief
وَلَقَلَّand indeed little مِنكِfrom you بُكىًweeping عَلىover قَبريmy grave
then weep over my grave, grief-stricken,
though little indeed will you weep over my grave.
فَاِستَيقِنيthen be certain أَنّيthat I المُصابُam the one stricken بِكُمby you
عَجِلَتhastened مَنِيَّتُهُhis death مَعwith الزَفرِsighing
Then be certain that I am the one stricken by you,
whose death came swiftly with a sigh.
