Abān called for parting from the one you love;
The call of parting from the one I love caused
so tears overflowed, and the heart burned.
Tears to overflow and my soul to burn
كَأَنَّas though شَرارَةًa spark وَقَعَتfell بِقَلبيinto my heart

As though a spark had fallen into my heart,
As if a spark fell upon my heart
racing through my eye and my blood.
Kindling flames in my tears and blood
إِذاwhenever أَنشَدتُI recite verse أَوor نَسَمَتblew gently عَلَيهاupon it

Whenever I recite verse, or it is breathed upon
Whenever I recite poetry or the summer breezes
by summer winds, smoke rises from it.
Blow upon it, the smoke rises for her
