ماwhat بالُcondition عَينِكَyour eye دَمعُهاits tears مَسكوبُpoured out
حُرِبَتit was bereft وَأَنتَand you بِدَمعِهاthrough its tears مَحروبُbereft
What ails your eye, that its tears are pouring forth?
It is bereft, and you are bereft through its tears.
وَكَذاكَand so مَنwhoever صَحِبَkept company with الحَوادِثَthe vicissitudes لَمdid not تَزَلcease
تَأتيcome عَلَيهِupon him سَلامَةٌsafety وَنُكوبُand misfortune
And so, whoever keeps company with life's vicissitudes never ceases
To meet with safety and misfortune.
إِنَّindeed الرَزِيَّةَthe calamity لارَزِيَّةَno calamity مِثلُهاlike it
يَومَthe day اِبنُson of حَفصٍHafs فيin الدِماءِblood خَضيبُdyed
Indeed, this calamity has no calamity like it:
The day Ibn Hafs was dyed in blood.
لاnot يَستَجيبُresponds وَلاand not يَحيرُreturns an answer لِسانُهُhis tongue
وَلَقَدand indeed يَحيرُreturns an answer لِسانُهُhis tongue وَيُجيبُand replies
He does not respond, nor does his tongue return an answer,
Yet once his tongue would return an answer and reply.
غُلِبَwas overcome العَزاءُconsolation عَلىover اِبنِson of حَفصٍHafs وَالأَسىand grief
إِنَّindeed العَزاءَconsolation بِمِثلِهِfor one like him مَغلوبُovercome
Consolation and grief are overwhelmed at the loss of Ibn Hafs;
Indeed, consolation for one like him is vanquished.
ياO أَرضُearth وَيحَكِwoe to you أَكرِميهِhonor him فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
لَمdid not يَبقَremain لِلعَتكِيِّfor al-Ataki فيكِwithin you ضَريبُa peer
O earth, woe to you! Honor him, for he,
Al-Ataki, has no peer left within you—
أَبهىmore splendid عَلىupon خَشَبِwood المَنابِرِthe pulpits قائِماًstanding
يَوماًon any day وَأَحرَبَand more warlike إِذwhen تُشَبُّare kindled حُروبُwars
More splendid, standing upon the wooden pulpits,
On any day, and more warlike when wars are kindled.
إِذwhen قيلَit was said أَصبَحَcame to be فيin المَقابِرِthe graveyards ثاوِياًlying
عُمَرٌUmar وَشُقَّand was torn لِواؤُهُhis banner المَنصوبُraised
When it was said that he now lay in the graveyards—
Umar—and his raised banner was torn,
وَبَكَيتُand I wept إِذwhen بَكَتِwept العَتيكُal-Atik لِبَدرِهاfor its full moon
أَودىhe perished فَبَدرُso the full moon سَمائِهاits sky مَسلوبُstolen away
And I wept when al-Atik wept for its full moon:
He perished, so the full moon of its sky is stolen away.
ياO وَيحَwoe to فاطِمَةَFatimah الَّتيwho فُجِعَتwas bereaved بِهِof him
وَتَشَقَّقَتand were rent مِنهاfrom her عَلَيهِover him جُيوبُgarment necklines
Alas for Fatimah, who was bereaved of him,
And her garments' necklines were rent in mourning for him.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَعلَمُI surely know إِذwhen تَضَمَّنَهُenfolded him الثَرىthe moist earth
أَنthat سَوفَwill تَكمُدُshe languishes in grief بَعدَهُafter him وَتَذوبُand she melts away
I surely know, now that the moist earth has enfolded him,
That she will languish in grief after him and melt away.
وَظَلِلتُand I continued أَندُبُI lament سَيفَthe sword آلِthe house of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
عُمَراًUmar وَجَلَّand was great هُنالِكَthere المَندوبُthe lamented one
And I kept lamenting the sword of Muhammad's house,
Umar—and great was the one lamented there.
فَعَلَيكَso upon you ياO عُمَرُUmar السَلامُpeace فَإِنَّناfor indeed we
باكوكَthose weeping for you ماas long as هَبَّتblew صَباًan east wind وَجَنوبُand a south wind
So peace be upon you, O Umar, for we
Will weep for you as long as east and south winds blow.
