قُلsay لِحُبّاءَto Ḥubbāʾ إِنif تَعيشيyou live فَموتيthen die
سَوفَwill نَرضىwe accept لَكِfor you الَّذيwhat قَدalready رَضيتِyou have accepted
Say to Ḥubbāʾ: if you live, then die.
We shall accept for you what you have already accepted.
قَدindeed قَبِلناwe have accepted ماwhat كانَwas مِنكِfrom you إِلَيناto us
وَبَريناand we are free مِنof عَيبِهِits fault إِنif بَريتِyou are free
We have accepted what came from you to us,
and we are free of its blame, if you are free of it.
حَدِّثينيtell me فَقَدfor indeed وَقَعتُI have fallen بِشَكٍّinto doubt
أَتَعَمَّدتِdid you deliberately seek سُخطَناour displeasure أَمor غَبيتِwere you unaware
Tell me, for I have fallen into doubt:
did you deliberately provoke our displeasure, or were you unaware,
يَومَwhen تَعصينَyou defy عَزمَتيmy resolve فيin أُمورٍmatters
لَوif تَمَنَّيتِyou had wished مِثلَهاtheir like ماnot عُصيتِyou were defied
when you defied my resolve in matters
whose like, had you desired them, you would not have been defied?
هَلdid تَنَقَّمتِyou resent غَيرَanything but قَوليmy saying اِذاwhen كاwas (first part)
نَcompletion of 'was' عِثارٌa stumble وَرَوعَةٌand a fright لاmay ... not شَقيتِyou suffer
Did you resent anything but my saying, when there
was a stumble and a fright, 'May you never suffer'?
إِنif تَكونيyou are غَنيتِyou have no need عَنّاof us فَإِنّاthen indeed we
عَنكِof you أَغنىmore self-sufficient فَيَمِّميso head toward حَيثُwherever شيتِyou wish
If you have no need of us, then we
have still less need of you; go wherever you wish.
مَنwho يُرَجّيكِputs his hopes in you بَعدَafter بَيعِselling مُحِبٍّa lover
كانَhe used to يَهوىlove بِجُهدِهِwith all his might ماwhatever هَويتِyou loved
Who would put his hopes in you after you sold off a lover
who loved with all his might whatever you loved?
لَمnot تَكونيyou were لِتَصلُحيto be fit لِوَدادٍfor love
لِكَريمٍof a noble man كَحُلَّةِlike a robe العَنكَبوتِof the spider
You were never fit for the love
of a noble man—you are like a spider's robe.
قَدalready شَبِعناwe have had our fill مِنof وُدِّكِyour love المُرِّbitter طَعماًin taste
وَرَويناand we have drunk our fill إِنif كُنتِyou were مِنّاof us رَويتِyou have drunk your fill
We have had our fill of your love, bitter to the taste,
and we have drunk our fill, if you have drunk your fill of us.
لَيسَthere is not بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between مَنone who كانَwas وَخماًvile
لاnot يَفيhe keeps faith لِلخَليلِwith a close friend غَيرُother than السُكوتِsilence
Between me and one who is vile,
who keeps no faith with a close friend, there is only silence.
ماwhat use is عِتابيmy reproaching أَصَمَّa deaf person لاnot يَسمَعُhe hears الصَوthe sound (first part)

تَcompletion of 'the sound' وَشَوقيand my longing إِلىfor البَغيضِthe hateful one المَقيتِthe loathsome one
What use is my reproaching a deaf person who cannot hear the
sound, or my longing for one hateful and loathsome?
يااِبنَةَO daughter of العامِرِيِّal-ʿĀmirī قَدindeed كانَthere was عَهدٌa pledge
بَينَناbetween us فيin الهَوىlove وَلَكِنand yet نَسيتِyou forgot
O daughter of al-ʿĀmirī, there was once a pledge
between us in love, and yet you forgot.
فَاِذكُريso remember وُدَّناour love وَذوقيand taste سِواناothers besides us
تَذكُريناyou will remember us وَتَندَميand you will regret ماas long as بَقيتِyou remain alive
So remember our love, and taste others besides us:
you will remember us and regret it as long as you live.
أَوor أَفيقيrecover مِنfrom داءِillness ماwhat يَصنَعُdoes الحُبُّlove
بِصَبٍّon a lovesick soul فَطالَماfor long قَدindeed دَويتِyou have been ailing
Or recover from the sickness love inflicts
on a lovesick soul, for you have long been ailing.
لَنwill never تَناليyou attain بِوُدِّby loving هَذاthis one وَهَذاand this one

سُهمَةًa share فيin وِدادِناour love ماas long as حَيِيتِyou live
By loving this one and that, you will never win
a share in our love as long as you live.
كَيفَhow صَبريmy patience وَأَنتِwhile you عِنديto me كَنَفسيlike my own soul

بِمَكانِin the place of المُباعَدِthe one kept distant المَمقوتِthe despised one
How can I endure, when you, dear to me as my own soul,
are in the place of one kept distant and despised?
فَاِرجِعيso return إِنif رَجَعتِyou turn away عَنfrom رَأيِa resolve سوءٍevil
بِهَوىًwith a love لَيِّنِsoft الحَواشيthe edges ثَبيتِsteadfast
So return, if you turn away from an evil resolve,
with a love soft at the edges and steadfast.
وَإِذاand if ماever أَرَدتِyou want وُدّيmy love هَنيئاًsweet
فَصِلينيthen keep ties with me بِالصَبرِthrough self-restraint عَمَّنfrom those whom لَقيتِyou have met
And if ever you want my love to be sweet,
then keep ties with me, abstaining from those you have met.
أَنتِyou are ياقوتَةٌa ruby قَدَرتُI gained mastery عَلَيهاover it
لاnot أُحِبُّI like الشَريكَa partner فيin الياقوتِthe ruby
You are a ruby I have gained possession of;
I do not like a partner in the ruby.
