أَسُعادُO Suad جوديbe generous لاnot شُفيتُI am cured سُعاداSuad
وَصِليand draw close to بِوُدِّكِwith your love هائِماًa lovelorn wanderer مُعتاداever-returning
O Suad, be generous—may I never be cured of Suad!
And draw close with your love to a lovelorn, ever-returning visitor.
إِنَّindeed الزِيارَةَthe visit أَعقَبَتleft behind بِفُؤادِهِin his heart
طَرَباًrapture فَأَعقَبَthen it brought فِتنَةًinfatuation وَفَساداand ruin
Indeed, the visit left in his heart
Rapture, which in turn brought infatuation and ruin.
ماwhat تَأمُرينَdo you decree بِزائِرٍconcerning a visitor أَقصَيتِهِyou sent him away
يَومَon the day الخَميسِof Thursday وَقَدthough already رَجاhe hoped for ميعاداan appointment
What do you decree for a visitor you sent away
On Thursday, though he had hoped for an appointment?
أَمسَكتِyou held back شُقَّةَa piece نَفسِهِof his soul فَأَذاعَهاso he scattered it
وَبَخِلتِand you were stingy فَاِتَّخَذَso he made الهُمومَsorrows وِساداa pillow
You held back a piece of his soul, and he scattered it;
And you were stingy, so he made his sorrows a pillow.
وَتَرَكتِهِand you left him نِصباًstanding exposed إِلَيكِtoward you بِحاجَةٍin need
كَيماso that يَزيدُhe increases وَوَيلَهُand woe to him إِنif زاداhe increases
And you left him standing before you, in need,
That he might grow more needy—woe to him if he does!
قالواthey said نَكُدُّكَwe weary you بِالهَوىwith love وَتَكَدُّناand it wearies us
المَعيشَةُearning a living ماnot بَلَغتَyou have reached كِداداtoil
They said, 'We weary you with love, while we are wearied
By earning a living; you have not known such toil.'
وَلَقَدand indeed عَجِبتُI marveled مِنَat الضَعيفَةِthe frail woman إِذwhen بَدَتshe appeared
تَثنيbending أُسامَةَUsama فَاِنثَنىso he bent وَاِنقاداand submitted
And indeed I marveled at the frail one when she appeared,
Bending Usama: he bent and yielded.
أَسَدٌa lion تَصَيَّدَهُhunted him غَزالٌa gazelle شادِنٌnewly weaned
ماnot اِصطادَhunted قَبلَكِbefore you شادِنٌa weaned fawn آساداlions
A lion hunted down by a young gazelle—
No fawn before you ever hunted lions.
وَلَقَدand indeed أَقولُI say لِصاحِبٍto a companion ليof mine مُهتَرٍdelirious
قَدalready ماتَhe died مِنfrom كَلَفَinfatuation بِهاwith her أَوor كاداnearly did
And indeed I say to a delirious companion of mine,
Who has died of passion for her, or nearly died:
حَتّامَuntil when تُجشِمُنيyou burden me with الصِبىyouthful passion وَتَشُفُّنيand wear me away
بَلrather لَيتَif only غَيرَكَanother than you ياO فُؤادُheart فُؤاداa heart
How long will you burden me with youthful passion and wear me away?
Rather, would that another were my heart, O heart!
ماnot زِلتَyou have ceased تَذكُرُrecalling وَجهَهاher face وَحَديثَهاand her speech
مُنذُsince اِنصَرَفتَyou departed وَماand not ذَكَرتَyou remembered مَعاداthe hereafter
You have kept recalling her face and her words,
Since you departed, and never thought of the hereafter.
سُعدىSu'da مُباعِدَةٌkeeping her distance وَأَنتَwhile you مُخاطِرٌtake risks
أَفَقَدhave you then رَضيتَaccepted مَعَalong with الخِطارِthe risk بِعاداseparation
Su'da keeps her distance, while you take risks;
Have you then accepted separation along with the risk?
مَنَعَتكَshe denied you يَقظىwhile awake ماwhat تُحِبُّyou love وَلَمand did not تَجُدgive generously
فيin نَومِهاher sleep فَمَتىso when تَكونُwill she be جَواداgenerous
Awake, she denied you what you love, and was not generous
In her sleep; when, then, will she be generous?
وَإِذاand when أَرَدتَyou sought عِداتِهاher promises بِخِلَتshe was stingy بِهاwith them
حَتّىdown to الفُؤادِthe heart وَصافَحَتكَand she shook your hand جَماداlike a lifeless thing
And when you sought her promises, she was stingy with them,
Down to her very heart; she clasped your hand like a lifeless thing.
أَبِطَرفِwas it with a glance مُقلَتِكِof your eye المَريضَةِthe languid صِدتِهِyou caught him
ماnot إِنat all (emphasis) سَمِعتُI have heard بِمِثلِهِof one like him مُصطاداcaptured
Was it with the glance of your languid eye that you caught him?
Never have I heard of one like him being captured.

عَينٌan eye تُرَوِّحُbrings لِلعُيونِto the eyes سُهاداsleeplessness
A golden-hued, companionable woman; her veil is adorned
By an eye that brings sleeplessness to other eyes.
إِلّاif not تَكُنshe is قَمَرَthe moon السَماءِof heaven فَإِنَّهاthen indeed she
مِثلُlike المَريعَةِlush pasture تُعجِبُdelights الرُوّاداthe pasture-seekers
If she is not the moon of heaven, she is
Like lush pasture that delights its seekers.
وَلَقَدand indeed بَداit seemed ليto me أَنthat أَموتَI would die بِحُبِّهاof love for her
فَاِنهَلَّso poured دَمعيmy tears فيonto الرِداءِthe cloak وَجاداand flowed abundantly
And indeed it seemed to me that I would die of love for her;
So my tears poured onto my cloak in a generous flood.
فَطَوَتso she suspended زِيارَتَهاher visit لِغَيرِnot out of مَلامَةٍreproach
حَذَرَfor fear of المُراقِبِthe watcher لِلزَمانِfor time مِداداa stretch
So she suspended her visit, not out of reproach,
For fear of the watcher, for a stretch of time.
نَطَقَتshe spoke فَأَنطَقَso it made speak ماwhat سَمِعتُI heard مَدامِعيmy tear ducts
عَنon behalf of كُلِّevery ناطِقَةٍspeaking woman تَقولُwho says سَداداwhat is right
She spoke, and what I heard set my tears speaking
On behalf of every woman who speaks aright.
وَكَأَنَّand as though ماwhat سَمِعَتshe heard لَهُto him بِحَديثِهاthrough her speech
هاروتُHarut يَسلُبُrobs مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes رُقاداof sleep
And what she heard seemed to him, through her speech, like
Harut stealing sleep from his two eyes.
وَأَقامَand he remained يُشفِقُhe fears أَنthat يُجَنَّhe might go mad صَبابَةًfrom ardent longing
وَيَخافُand he fears مَوتَةَthe death قَلبِهِof his heart إِنif عاداhe returned
And he remained, fearing he would go mad with longing,
And fearing his heart would die if he returned.
