أَباO Abu عُمَرٍUmar ماno فيin طُلابيكَpetitioning you حاجَةٌuse
أَبا عُمَرٍ ما في طُلابيكَ حاجَةٌ
وَلاnor فيin الَّذيthat which مَنَّيتَناyou made us hope for ثُمَّthen أَضجَراit wearied us
وَلا في الَّذي مَنَّيتَنا ثُمَّ أَضجَرا
O Abu Umar, there is no use in petitioning you,
Oh Abu Umar, none of your students need
Nor in what you made us hope for, which then wearied us.
Nor he who granted us what we wished then grew bored
وَعَدتَyou promised فَلَمbut did not تَصدُقkeep your word وقُلتَand you said غَداًtomorrow غَداًtomorrow
وَعَدتَ فَلَم تَصدُق وقُلتَ غَداً غَداً
كَماjust as وُعِدَwas promised الكَمّونُthe cumin شُرباًa drink مُؤَخَّراdeferred
كَما وُعِدَ الكَمّونُ شُرباً مُؤَخَّرا
You promised but did not keep your word, and said, “Tomorrow, tomorrow,”
You promised but did not fulfill, and said “tomorrow, tomorrow,”
Just as cumin was promised a drink deferred.
As the feverish were promised a deferred drink
