وَمَلَلتُ العُذّالَ وَالنُصّاحا
My night grew long, and my heart spent it fluttering like a wing.
My night grew long, and my heart became a wing,
I grew weary of reproachers and advisers.
And I grew weary of blamers and advisors.

They bid the lover endure separation from one
They bid the lover show patience for one
whose love has wasted his body and laid him low.
Whose love has made his body fall to the ground.

Wretched is what they prescribe to one steeped in grief,
Wretched is their advice to one feeling sadness
enduring sorrows from ‘Abdah.
From worshippers of shelters.

O reciter who reminds us of God,
O reader reminded of God,
do you see sin in union with a beloved?
Do you see wrong in the union of love?

If it goes not beyond mere talk.

What good, O ‘Awn, can a lover hope for,
What good, O succor, can a lover hope for
seeking release from love in his heart’s dark core?
In the darkness of his heart? A comfort?
كَيفَhow يَرجوhe hopes for سُلُوَّforgetting love صَبٍّa passionate lover حَزينٍsorrowful

How can he hope a sorrowful lover will forget,
How can one in sorrow hope to find solace
when love, once made known, has increased his yearning?
When love has increased his misery?

If you come and go only to waken,
to have me heed counsel, I have no wish to heed it.
It is not awakening I desire.

Then stop your morning and evening visits to us,
Let your coming and going be far from us
so long as love for her visits us morning and evening.
Now that her love has departed from us.

I long concealed my passion, but when
I kept my love hidden a long time but when
I could no longer bear love for ‘Abdah, it revealed itself.
I was straitened by love of Abdah, I spoke of it.

Would that I knew of Umm ‘Amr - and ‘Amr
was neither ignorant nor a jester.
Was neither ignorant nor joking.

Was it a word from her that struck him with a spell?
Some talk of hers hit him with sickness.
Would that he had died before her and found rest!
Would that he had died before her and found rest.

Rather, he hopes for what cannot be attained; were it not
But he hopes for what cannot be obtained, and but for
for what he hopes for, he would don haircloth and wander.
What he hopes, he would have donned the garments of death.

Umm ‘Amr, love for you keeps stealthily slaying
Umm ‘Amr, your love continues to find
my fortitude, until I was utterly exposed.
Its way to console me until I am shamed.

How can you not have mercy on a loving soul
dead from love for you, dead beyond all doubt?
Dead from your love, a terrible death?

He used to tend the lamp but when
love came to him as a guest, he neglected the lamp.
Love distracted him, he lost the lamp.

If you meant to torment him
in jest, you have put an end to jest.
With jest, you have cut off all jest.

Bound to life through her; and if he lives on
Attached to life through her, and if she
and she dies, he will weep for her and wail.
Lived he rejoiced, wept over her when she died.

then summon the flock of beauties to witness my death,
Summon a flock of sailors to witness my death
with burial perfume; I love beautiful women.
With spices - for I love sailors.

Because of love for miserly ‘Abdah, I
For love of the miserly Abdah, I see
see no relief for my heart except in her.
No solace for my heart but her.

You are Satan’s helper if you do not help me;
You, succor, are Satan's aid if you do not help me.
so heed what I said, and cure my refusal to drink.
Then begone from me, you good-for-naught!

And summon my people against Umm ‘Amr - for I
have bound love for her upon me as a sash.
Have bound myself in her love.

Love-distraught by day, propped on my elbow at night,
I spend my days in anxiety, my nights
until I behold the dawn.
In wakefulness, until dawn breaks.

For love of ‘Ubaydah, I have never ceased to love
I have not ceased, since loving Ubayda, to love
whatever is near her, until I even loved the winds.
All but her, until I loved the winds.

I do not forget the morning she rose and walked swaying
I cannot forget the dawn when she rose to pray
to the prayer ground; my heart flew up and fell.
And my heart flew off and fell.

Among women who, when they wanted light
Of women, when they want to light
for darkness, made her a lamp.
The darkness, they make it a lamp.

and unveiled what she concealed [al-wiḥāḥ: unclear as written].
While I am denied even the dimmest glow.
