لَقَدindeed كادَalmost ماwhat أُخفيI conceal مِنَof الوَجدِlonging وَالهَوىand love
يَكونُbecome جَوىًburning anguish بَينَbetween الجَوانِحِthe ribs أَوor خَبلاmadness
Indeed, what I conceal of longing and love has almost
The passion and longing I concealed
become burning anguish between my ribs, or madness.
Were on the verge of becoming evident between my ribs, or madness,
ذُوone with القَرابَةِkinship زادَنيincreases in me
وُلوعاًardor بِذكراهاin recalling her وَوَجداًand longing بِهاfor her مَهلا'Easy!'
When a kinsman says, 'Easy!' it increases
When my close kinsman said "wait",
my passion for recalling her and my longing for her—that 'Easy!'
He increased my agony with the mention of her, and longing for her, wait!
فَلاso let not يَحسَبِsuppose البيضُthe fair-skinned women الأَوانِسُthe winsome maidens أَنَّthat فيin
فُؤاديmy heart سِوىapart from سُعدىSuʿdā لِغانِيَةٍfor a beautiful woman فَضلاroom to spare
So let the fair, winsome maidens not suppose that in
So let not the fair maidens think that in
my heart there is room for any beauty besides Suʿdā.
My heart lies aught but my happiness with Su`da, the superior.
فَأُقسِمُso I swear إِنif كانَis الهَوىlove غَيرَnot بالِغٍbringing
بِيَwith me القَتلَkilling مِنbecause of سُعدىSuʿdā لقَدsurely جاوَزَsurpassed القَتلاkilling
So I swear: if love has not brought
I swear, if passion has not reached its end
me to death because of Suʿdā, it has surely surpassed death.
In perishing me by Su`da's hand, it has gone beyond perishing.
فياso, O صَاحِfriend خَبِّرنيtell me الَّذيwhat أَنتَyou صانِعٌgoing to do
بِقاتِلَتيwith my female slayer ظُلماًunjustly وَماand not طَلَبَتshe sought ذَحلاblood vengeance
So, O friend, tell me what you will do
So inform me, O messenger, what you are doing
with her who slays me unjustly, though she sought no blood vengeance,
To my unjust killer, who sought no injustice,
سِوىexcept أَنَّنيthat I فيin الحُبِّlove بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهاand between her
شَدَدتُI fastened عَلىupon أكظامِoutlets سِرٍّa secret لَهاof hers قُفلاa lock
except that I, in the love between her and me,
Save that between her and I, in love
fastened a lock upon the outlets of a secret of hers.
I shut fast the padlocks on a secret of hers.
