He who strives for right guidance has cast his wishes aside,
The determined one seeking guidance has cast off desires
and I see your wishes trailing long hems.
Yet I see your desires trailing long trains
حِيَلُstratagems اِبنِson of آدَمَAdam فيin الحَياةِlife كَثيرَةٌmany
وَالمَوتُand death يَقطَعُcuts short حِيلَةَthe stratagem of المُحتالِthe schemer
The son of Adam's stratagems in life are many,
Man has many tricks in life
and death cuts short the schemer's stratagem.
But death cuts short the trickster's schemes
قِستُI weighed السُؤالَasking فَكانَand it proved أَعظَمَgreater قيمَةًin value
مِنthan كُلَّevery عارِفَةٍfavor جَرَتcame about بِسُؤالِthrough asking
I weighed asking and found its cost greater
I weighed asking and found it far outweighed
than any favor obtained through asking.
Every other knowing pulled along by questions
فَإِذاso if اِبتُليتَyou are tried بِبَذلِby offering وَجهِكَyour face سائِلاًas a petitioner
فَاِبذُلهُthen offer it لِلمُتَكَرِّمِto the noble-hearted one المِفضالِthe bountiful one
So if you are tried by offering your face as a petitioner,
So if you are tested with offering your face asking
then offer it to the noble-hearted, bountiful man.
Then offer it to the noble and gracious
وَإِذاand if خَشيتَyou fear تَعَذُّراًhardship فيin بَلدَةٍa town
فَاِشدُدthen hold fast يَدَيكَyour two hands بِعاجِلِto swift التَرحالِdeparture
And if you fear hardship in a town,
And if you fear hardship in a town
then hold fast with both hands to swift departure.
Then brace yourself for promptly moving on
وَاِصبِرand be patient عَلىthrough غِيَرِthe vicissitudes of الزَمانِtime فَإِنَّماfor … is only
فَرَجُrelief from الشَدائِدِhardships مِثلُlike حَلِّuntying عِقالِa camel's hobble
And endure the vicissitudes of time, for
And be patient with all that is not as you wish
relief from hardships is but like untying a camel's hobble.
The relief of afflictions comes like loosing knots
