أَنفُسُI outlast الشَوقَlonging وَلاand not يَنفُسُنيoutlasts me
وَإِذاand when قارَعَنيcontends with me الهَمُّworry رَجَعretreats
I outlast longing, but it does not outlast me.
My soul yearns but does not yearn for me
And when worry contends with me, it retreats.
And if worries assault me, I fend them off
أًصرَعُI throw down القِرنَthe adversary إِذاwhen نازَلتُهُI confront him
وَإِذاand when صارَعَنيwrestles with me الحُبُّlove صَرَعthrows down
I throw down my adversary when I confront him.
I fell the mighty when I attack them
And when love wrestles with me, it throws me down.
And if love wrestles me, I wrestle back
أَناI كَالسَيفِlike the sword إِذاif رَوَّعتَهُyou frighten it
لَمdid not يُرَوِّعكَfrighten you وَإِنand if هُزَّis brandished قَطَعcuts
I am like a sword: if you frighten it,
I am like a sword when provoked
It does not frighten you; but if brandished, it cuts.
It won't frighten you even if it's drawn and slices
سَيفِيَmy sword الحِلمُforbearance وَفيand in مَنطَقَتيmy girdle
أَسَدُthe lion المَوتِof death إِذاwhen المَوتُdeath نَقَعtakes hold
My sword is forbearance, and at my girdle
My sword is patience and in its sheath
Is death's lion when death takes hold.
The lion of death, when death pounces
