ʿAbda has a dwelling; the dwelling does not speak to us.

Its dwelling sites appear like lines of writing.

I question stones and a ruined encircling trench.

And how can a trench and stones answer speech?

So her dwelling did not speak to me when I questioned it,

And within my liver is a blaze like naphtha set alight.

And at the sites of her dwelling, if it could speak,

There would be tidings for a sorrowful man whose longing is plain.

My neighbors departed, so my eye, at their parting,

Overflows with streaming tears whenever the dwelling appears.

I wept for the one whose nearness I once enjoyed,

And what I feared yesterday came true when they departed.
