When they came forth from among the slave women,

before me at al-Bardān, five in all,

And they seemed like crescent moons,

beneath their garments, keeping a sun company.

At dawn they sought a perfume caravan’s fragrance,

and dipped themselves thoroughly in saffron.

When they came forth, they surrounded her,

and listened intently, without so much as a whisper.

Then they asked me who was in the houses,

so I said, ‘They shelter no human being.’

    Would that prying eyes

were utterly blotted out from us today!

Then they found in choice pieces of conversation

    delight, and departed unscathed.

Were it not for their advances toward me,

O priest, I would have been a priest like you.
