أَصَفراءُO Safra كانَwas الوُدُّaffection مِنكِfrom you مُباحاfreely available
أَصَفراءُ كانَ الوُدُّ مِنكِ مُباحا
لَيالِيَon nights كانَwas الهَجرُestrangement مِنكِfrom you قِراحاunalloyed
لَيالِيَ كانَ الهَجرُ مِنكِ قِراحا
O Safra, your affection was freely available
My fair one, once your affection was permitted
On nights when your estrangement was unalloyed.
Those nights your abandonment was yet grief
وَكانَand were جَواريmaidens الحَيِّthe tribe إِذwhen كُنتِyou were فيهِمُamong them
وَكانَ جَواري الحَيِّ إِذ كُنتِ فيهِمُ
قِباحاًugly فَلَمّاbut when غِبتِyou went away صِرنَthey became مِلاحاlovely
قِباحاً فَلَمّا غِبتِ صِرنَ مِلاحا
And the maidens of the tribe, when you were among them, were
And the neighborhood, when you lived in it
Ugly; but when you went away, they became lovely.
Was miserable, but when you left it, became pleasant
