    O Talha, you once were

in a fine state of good fortune.

    You regarded your cousins' due

as a matter permitting no neglect.

    And you were always busy

    turning over dinars.

    So now you have turned

    to selling glass bottles.

    Such is Time, wrapped

    around mankind, bringing change.

So sell me a crate of yours

for a thousand, no paltry sum:

    thirty and sixty,

    and ten, without stinting.

    Then take them, like lamps,

in the hands of young maidens:

    two strands of pearls

    and of Hazzur's rubies.

It lights the room and the house

and the depths of underground stores.

And what a splendid sight for the beholder

    in pitch-black darkness!

O Talha, you have fallen short,

and I will not accept stinting.

I love bounty that comes easily,

and loathe whatever is hard to obtain.

    فَإِنَّ البُردَ بِالنيرِ

    So dishonor yourself—or adorn yourself;

for a cloak's beauty lies in its woven stripe.
