And a much-reproached man, whose talk the ignoble shunned,
Mu'adh left the mean behind, his discourse
well known for youthful gallantry and jesting—
A gallant wit, of noble bearing and jest.

I shared sweet basil with him in the breath of midmorning,
The breeze disputed with the radiant morn
and amid the music of a full-hipped woman, both hands busy,
The clatter of the working hands' unrest,

with a flask holding enough to satisfy the drinkers,
A goblet with a little to content
paired with a radiant, gazelle-like one, freely offered,
Paired with a flower like a roe-deer dressed.

Apples suffused with freshness manifest,

makes up for her companion's lack of a lamp.
To recompense the comrade for the lamp's arrest.
