We are the horsemen on the day of al-Shiʿb, in broad daylight,

And those who strike, whatever pain there may have been,

And those bearing battle-marks, while most steeds are gaunt,

Worn out, like date-stones cut away from their flesh.

Why did you not ask—and truthful speech is the truest—

About us, about you, and about those we meet at al-Raqam:

How we cut off at Ṣafr, from among your noses,

A proud, high-bridged nose, which by evening was utterly severed?

O ʿĀm, do not distort the claim; already left behind were

Bands of your people between al-Wajj and al-Rakham.

A rain-burst from Ghayẓ swept upon them and settled

Among them; their tales among the people are like a dream.
