    And indeed I grew angry for Khindif and her Qays,

    When her deserters faltered in coming to her aid.

    وَلَدَيَّ في أَمثالِها أَمثالُها

    I defended her honor and kept it safe;

    And for the likes of her, I have sayings to match.

    إِنَّ القَصائِدَ شَرُّها أَغفالُها

    Indeed, I am a man who brands poems for his foes;

    Indeed, the worst poems are those left unbranded.

    وَالمَشرَفِيَّةُ وَالقَنا إِشعالُها

    My people, with their gathered host, are sons of oft-renewed war;

    And Mashrafi swords and spears are its kindling.

    Murrah has ever been known amid the din of battle

    For giving spears a second draught, and bearing their first themselves.

    Since the age of ʿAd, we have been known

    For capturing kings, killing them, and fighting them.
