    The people of a house between al-Rusafa and the bridge

    have prolonged my vexation by turning away for so long.

    They tormented me with their distance and afflicted my heart

    with two sorrows, one new and one long-standing.

    Whenever the north wind blows, I sigh,

    and my heart says to my eye, 'Be generous with tears.'

    فَتَحَيَّرت كَالطَريدِ الشَريدِ

    My patience in their absence waned, and they showed me no mercy;

    so I was bewildered, like an outcast wanderer.

    سي فَأَعيَيتُ وَاِنتَهى مَجهودِي

    The days have left me to myself concerning you;

    so I grew exhausted, and my strength was spent.
