ياO مادِحَpraiser of البَحرِthe sea وَهوَwhile he يَجهَلُهُdoes not know it
يا مادِحَ البَحرِ وَهوَ يَجهَلُهُ
مَهلاًHold back فَإِنّيfor indeed I قَتَلتُهُhave mastered it عِلماin knowledge
مَهلاً فَإِنّي قَتَلتُهُ عِلما
O praiser of the sea, though you do not know it,
O you who praise the sea yet are ignorant of it
Hold back, for I know it through and through.
Hold on, for I have killed it knowingly
مَكسَبُهُgain from it مِثلُlike قَعرِهِits bottom بُعداًin remoteness
مَكسَبُهُ مِثلُ قَعرِهِ بُعداً
وَرِزقُهُand its bounty مِثلُlike مائِهِits water طَعماin taste
وَرِزقُهُ مِثلُ مائِهِ طَعما
Gain from it is as far out of reach as its depths,
Its depths are as far as its gains
And its bounty tastes like its water.
And its sustenance is as salty as its waters
