I loved her
وَمَنَحتُهاand I gave her لُطفيmy tenderness وَلينَand the softness of جَناحيmy wing
O gazelle of al-Sib, whom I loved,
Oh gazelle of the forest that I loved,
And to whom I gave my tenderness and the softness of my wing,
And to whom I gave my kindness and the softness of my wing,
عَينايَmy two eyes باكِيَتانِboth weeping بَعدَكin your absence لِلَّذيfor what
أودعتyou lodged قَلبيmy heart مِنof نُدوبِscars جِراحيmy wounds
Both my eyes weep in your absence for what
My eyes are crying for what I deposited
You lodged in my heart—the scars of my wounds.
In my heart of the wounds of my sorrows,
سَقياًmay rain fall لأَحمَدupon Ahmad مِنas أَخٍa brother وَلقاسِمand upon Qasim
فَقَداthey both missed غُدُوّيmy morning outings لاهِياًcarefree وَرَواحيand my evening outings
May rain bless Ahmad, a brother, and Qasim;
Watering for Ahmad a brother, and for Qasim,
Both have missed my carefree morning and evening outings,
Who lost my morning wanderings and relaxation,
وَتَرَدُّديand my coming and going مِنfrom بَيتِthe house of فَرزٍFarz آمِناًsafe
مِنfrom قُربِthe nearness of كُلِّevery مُخالِفٍopponent وَملاحيand quarreller
And my coming and going from Farz's house, safe
And my coming and going safely from the house of Farz,
From the nearness of every opponent and quarreller.
Safe from the nearness of every opponent and complainer.
أَيّامَin the days when تَغبِطُنيenvied me المُلوكُthe kings وَلاand not أَرىI see
أَحَداًanyone لَهُhe has كَتَدَلُّليlike my pampered ways وَمراحيand my merriment
In the days when kings envied me, and I saw no
Days when kings congratulate me, and I don’t see
One whose pampered ways and merriment matched mine.
Anyone who has my pampering and comfort.
تَصِفُdescribe القِيانُthe singing slave women إِذاwhen خَلَونَthey are alone مجانَتيmy wantonness
وَيَصِفنَand they describe لِلشربِto the drinking companions الكِرامِthe noble سَماحيmy generosity
The singing slave women, when alone, describe my wantonness,
The liquors describe, when they are pure, my generosity,
And describe my generosity to the noble drinking companions.
And describe for drinking nobles, my liberality.
