غَضِبَgrew angry الحَبيبُthe beloved عَلَيَّwith me فيover حُبّيmy love لَهُfor him
غَضِبَ الحَبيبُ عَلَيَّ في حُبّي لَهُ
نَفسيmy soul الفِداءُthe ransom لِمُذنِبٍfor a wrongdoer غَضبانِangry
نَفسي الفِداءُ لِمُذنِبٍ غَضبانِ
The beloved grew angry with me because I loved him.
The beloved grew angry with me over my love for him.
Let my soul be the ransom for an angry wrongdoer.
May my soul be the ransom for an angry wrongdoer.
ماnot ليfor me بِماfor what ذَكَرreported الرَسولُthe messenger يَدانِstrength (literally, two hands) بَلrather
ما لي بِما ذَكَر الرَسولُ يَدانِ بَل
إِنif تَمَّis settled رَأيُكَyour resolve ذاthis خَلَعتُI shall cast off عِنانيmy reins
إِن تَمَّ رَأيُكَ ذا خَلَعتُ عِناني
I have no power to do what the messenger relayed—but
I have no strength to bear what the messenger reported; rather,
if this resolve of yours is final, I shall cast off my reins.
If this resolve of yours is settled, I shall cast off my reins.
ياO مَنyou who يَتوقُlongs إِلىfor حَبيبٍa beloved مُذنِبٍblameworthy
يا مَن يَتوقُ إِلى حَبيبٍ مُذنِبٍ
طاوَعتهyou obeyed him فَجَزاكَand so he repaid you بِالعِصيانِwith disobedience
طاوَعته فَجَزاكَ بِالعِصيانِ
O you who yearn for a beloved who has sinned,
O you who long for a blameworthy beloved,
you obeyed him, and he repaid you with disobedience.
You obeyed him, and he repaid you with disobedience.
هَلّاwhy did you not اِنتَحَرتَyou killed yourself فَكُنتَand so you became أَوَّلَthe first هالِكٍone to perish
هَلّا اِنتَحَرتَ فَكُنتَ أَوَّلَ هالِكٍ
إِنif لَمnot يَكُنbe لَكَfor you بِالصُدودِagainst rejection يَدانِstrength (literally, two hands)
إِن لَم يَكُن لَكَ بِالصُدودِ يَدانِ
Why did you not take your life and become the first to perish,
Why did you not take your own life and become the first to perish,
if you had no power against his turning away?
If you had no strength to bear rejection?
كُنّاwe were وَكُنتُمand you were كَالبَنانِlike the fingers وَكَفِّهاand their palm
كُنّا وَكُنتُم كَالبَنانِ وَكَفِّها
فَالكَفُّso the palm مُفرَدَةٌalone بِغَيرِwithout بَنانِfingers
فَالكَفُّ مُفرَدَةٌ بِغَيرِ بَنانِ
We and you were like the fingers and their palm;
We and you were like fingers and their palm;
now the palm is left alone, without fingers.
So the palm is alone, without fingers.
خُلِقَwas created السُرورُjoy لِمَعشَرٍfor a group of people خُلِقواthey were created لَهُfor it
خُلِقَ السُرورُ لِمَعشَرٍ خُلِقوا لَهُ
وَخُلِقتُand I was created لِلعَبراتِfor tears وَالأَحزانِand sorrows
وَخُلِقتُ لِلعَبراتِ وَالأَحزانِ
Joy was created for a company of people created for it,
Joy was created for people who were created for it,
while I was created for tears and sorrows.
And I was created for tears and sorrows.
