What a man he was, whose robe the Kharijites dyed

With blood, the evening he set out from Hulwan!

O grave that has embraced Malik's virtues,

How much generosity and kindness lie within you!

Alas for the hero who exposed his cheek

And his brow to the horsemen's spearheads!

He pierced the battalion, marked for battle, his weapon slung,

While keen-edged swords were upon him like flames.

    The gladness of all things departed after him;

So the earth is desolate, without habitation.

On the morning Malik fell, the Shurat demolished

The pinnacle of glory and the splendors of the edifice.

They killed the Arabs' champion, through whom they

Found strength against calamities throughout the ages.

They deprived Maʿadd of what he had, and aroused

Tribal zeal in every Yemeni heart.

They left him in the thick dust-cloud, as though he were

A lion charging with forearm and fingers.

At his loss, fortunes fell away from auspicious stars

And clung to ill fortune and Aldebaran.

May Khuzaʿa's brother never be far away, as he lies

Martyred in obedience to the Most Merciful.

The misguided gained might through his loss, and a community was humbled,

Endowed with the truths of faith.

And his Qur'an wept for him, and the head of his spear,

And the Muslims, and the sovereign's realm.

And his horses were hamstrung, and shared out were

His coats of mail and full-length body armor.

Can the world then be praised, when it has carried off the one

Who sheltered us from the calamities of time?
