And if you see us gaunt, our honor remains ours,

kept intact, untouched by the generous and the miserly.

Through steadfast patience, we shielded the skin of our honor,

so our honor remained sound, while our people were gaunt.

And whoever among us grows poor lives by his sharp sword,

while whoever among the rest of mankind grows poor begs.

So if the days have changed for us,

with hardship and prosperity—as events do—

they have not softened any sturdy spear-shaft of ours,

nor exposed us to what is unseemly.

But we saddled our noble souls,

burdened with what they cannot bear, yet bearing it.

We lowered our eyes rather than cast them

toward a coveted gain that leaves a freeborn man open to reproach.
