أَلاAh! ياO قرQurr (name) لاdo not تَكُbe سامِرِيّاًlike al-Samiri
فَتَترُكَand thus leave مَنwhoever يَزورُكَvisits you فيin جِهادِhardship
Ah, O Qurr, do not be like al-Samiri,
Oh dwelling, do not be a place unvisited
and thus leave whoever visits you in hardship.
And forsake those who come to you striving
أَتَعجَبُare you surprised إِنif رَأَيتَyou see عَلَيَّupon me دَيناًa debt
وَقَدand already أَودىhas perished الطَريفُnewly acquired wealth مَعَalong with التِلادِlong-held wealth
Are you surprised if you see me in debt,
Are you surprised to see me indebted
when newly acquired wealth has perished along with the old?
When fate has taken both far and near
مَلأتُI filled يَديmy hand مِنَfrom الدُنياworldly wealth مِراراًmany times
فَماyet not طَمعَhoped العَواذِلُthe reproaching women فيin اِقتِصاديmy frugality
I have filled my hand with worldly wealth many times,
Many times have I filled my hands in this life
yet the women who reproached me never hoped I would be frugal.
Yet never have the insolent coveted my giving
وَلاnor وَجَبَتwas due عَلَيَّupon me زَكاةُzakat (obligatory alms) مالٍwealth
وَهَلand is تَجِبُdue الزَكاةُzakat (obligatory alms) عَلىupon جَوادِa generous man
Nor has zakat on wealth ever been due from me;
No alms are due on wealth I've held
and is zakat ever due from a generous man?
Does zakat bind the open-handed?
