O sons of Taghlib, you have indeed been bereaved
O sons of Taghlib, you have indeed been bereaved
by Yazid—by his swords—of al-Walid.
of al-Walid by Yazid’s swords.

Had swords other than Yazid’s
fought him, they would have met the opposite of good fortune.
clashed with him, they would have met ill fortune.

Wa’il—some of its people kill others;
Nothing but iron can notch iron.
nothing but iron blunts iron.

al-Walid would have emerged victorious over him.
al-Walid would have prevailed over him.
