يَتَلَقّىhe meets النَدىgenerosity بِوَجهٍwith a face حَيِيّbashful
يَتَلَقّى النَدى بِوَجهٍ حَيِيّ
وَصُدورand the points القَناof the spears بِوَجهٍwith a face وَقاحِbold
وَصُدور القَنا بِوَجهٍ وَقاحِ
He meets generosity with a bashful face,
He receives the dew with a shy face
and the spearheads with a bold face.
While the chests of the lutes are impudent
هَكَذاthus هَكَذاthus تَكونُis المَعاليgreatness
هَكَذا هَكَذا تَكونُ المَعالي
طرقُthe paths المَجدِof glory غَيرُdifferent from طُرقِthe paths المِزاحِof jest
طرقُ المَجدِ غَيرُ طُرقِ المِزاحِ
Thus, thus is greatness;
Thus, thus are sublimities
the paths of glory differ from the paths of jest.
The paths of glory are not the paths of jest
