Would that, instead of all Mālik’s bounty
Oh that my possessions were utterly destroyed,
and whatever favor is hoped for from him,
And that the hopes of gain from them had departed.
أُصِبتُI was afflicted بِأَضعافِwith multiples of أَضعافِهِits multiples
أُصِبتُ بِأَضعافِ أَضعافِهِ
وَلَمand did not أَنتَجِعهُseek him out for aid وَلَمand did not أَرغَبِyearn
وَلَم أَنتَجِعهُ وَلَم أَرغَبِ
I had suffered many, many times its worth,
I have had my fill, and more than my fill, of them,
without seeking him out or yearning for it.
Yet neither did I profit from them, nor take joy in them.
أَسَأتُI erred in اِختِيارِيَmy choice مِنكَfrom you الثَوابthe reward
أَسَأتُ اِختِيارِيَ مِنكَ الثَواب
لِيَmine الذَنبُthe fault جَهلاًthrough ignorance وَلَمand did not تُذنِبِyou do wrong
لِيَ الذَنبُ جَهلاً وَلَم تُذنِبِ
I chose poorly in seeking a reward from you;
I made a bad choice in choosing rewards from You.
The fault is mine, through ignorance; you did no wrong.
The sin is mine, in ignorance, while You are sinless.
