شرط العُبودِيَّةِ الخَلْصاءِ بالأَدَبِ
Whoever is a servant to a people, let him fulfill toward them
Whoever is a servant of a people should be loyal to them
The requirement of pure servitude, with due courtesy.
The condition of true servitude is courtesy and refinement

And let him occupy himself with them, not with the affairs of others,
He should busy himself with their affairs, not others’
Even if he is torn apart between toil and exhaustion.
Even if torn between hardship and fatigue

How astonishing some are: they slipped in their claim to love,
How strange are those who falsely claim passion
And they persisted, roaming the encampment with lies.
They have transgressed and debased the living with lies

فأَينَ أَنتَ من الأَعراضِ والنَّشَبِ
A condition of love is surrendering the heart to it;
Sacrificing one's heart is a condition of love
Then where do you stand regarding worldly goods and wealth?
So where are you in gallantry and vigor?

Love seizes its people and drives them
Love seizes its people and protects them
Away from every pious, righteous son and father.
From every sinful, deviant, and immoral person

Love admits no partnership; it is forever one,
There is no partnership in love, one alone forever
Apart from attachments, severing the cord and kinship.
Beyond any associations, family ties or ancestry

Praise be to God: I have a heart in which I treasured
Praise be to God, my heart is a treasure
My beloved, safeguarded: he was neither present nor absent.
Where my secret love is protected, absent yet present

An alif, stripped of my knowledge and my deeds,
Thousands have stripped themselves of my knowledge, deeds,
And of my insights, my taste, and my courtesy,
Discernment, taste, etiquette, manners and breeding

And the spiritual ascension of my soul
And of the virtues of my peoples and my ancestral honor.
And the merits of my people and pedigree

I said to my heart only, when recalling
I have not spoken to my heart unless I recall
My beloved's meanings: 'Withdraw from joy, and be at peace.'
The meanings of my love, beyond joy and commotion

The Throne, the earthly expanse, and the celestial spheres bear witness for me
The Divine Throne, the earthly throne, and the orbits bear witness
That I sever my bond with all but him.
That I have severed all connections save my cause

I live, I die, in my two states of rapture,
I live and die in rapture, in exaltation
Between drawing away from him and drawing near.
Whether distant from it or drawn nearer

Oh, the wonders! The heart has melted for him,
Wondrous that my heart melted for it
And I did not say, 'O my heart, melt in passion.'
Yet I never called "O my heart!" in passion

I have become sultan of the company of his lovers;
I have become the sultan of the lover’s allegiance
When I appear, they fall submissively to their knees.
When I come forth they bow down submissively

From Hashim, noble clay sprang forth within me;
From Hashim I inherited a noble essence
So the water is my father's water, and the well my father's well.
The water is my father's water, the well my father's well

From the meadow between Shih and Kuthub

Delicious wine that came with a sweet draught,
With delicious wine of the sweetest draught

And by an overwhelming clamour from longing's ambush,
An intense clamor rose from the ambush of passion
That rose for the people of love with the clamorous army,
For the lovers, at the impregnable stronghold

Gleaming lightning bolts from their presence
That set the right of the two ribs ablaze for us within the domes,
Brought good fortune to the two sides within the domes

The tablet of their wisdom breaks forth
Wondrous, stirring the mind to wonder,
With amazing wisdom that astounds the mind

I never once imagined my own existence—[unclear character]—by their glory,
Never in my existence, by their might,
Nor did I turn toward my return and my final destination.
Did I turn to consider my coming and going

How often I behold, for my life, the spirit of their breeze,
How often their soul-refreshing breath
Finding solace, as a discerning, seasoned youth would.
Brought life to my life, by the manners of an amiable companion!

How often I asked the wind about news of their kingdom,
I would ransom the sanctuary's little breezes with my mother and father.
I would sacrifice for the south winds of the sanctuary and my father

How often I knocked at the door while the travelers slept
And the mind is between being present and being snatched away.
With my heart wavering between presence and absence

I incited the crowing roosters about resolves
And the people are between those summoned and those volunteering.
While the people were halfway between envoys and commissioners

Those pacts shone, O my heart, so rejoice
And rejoice in your beloved, safe from weariness.
In your love, safe from exhaustion and fatigue

The beloved bestowed generously upon us after famine,
The beloved was generous to us after an absence
And we are safe from the murderous ambush of fear and dread.
And we felt secure from the murder and terror of fear

Praise be to God! An assembly without separation
Through the resolve of the Hashimite, the Arab master.
By the resolve of the Hashimi Arab nobleman
