Who will aid a body worn away by separation's anguish,

Which affliction has strung on the thread of imagination,

And a heart that, since the caravan chanted by night,

Flew in longing, then grew bewildered among the camels,

And tears that roar like clouds in anguish,

    In an unbroken, thunderous succession?

Who will aid an inner self empty of all but love for you,

O my beloved, and a mind lost in bewilderment?

Such are separation's visitations; and how many, in

Separation, are the heavy upsurges of sorrow!

We have indeed seen you with the heart, and one understands

The sign of one's state as plainly as explicit speech.

And we have beheld you from a distant place,

Here with us, like bodily forms beside their shadows.

Replace distance and estrangement with nearness

And tenderness, for distance is the death of men.

    بَعضُ شأنِ السَّاداتِ غَوْثُ المَوالي

    And rescue us from separation's anguish, as a kindness;

Part of the masters' role is to aid their dependents.
