ماwhat بالُcondition قومٍa people ترىsee للغيرِfor others مقْدرَةًpower
ما بالُ قومٍ ترى للغيرِ مقْدرَةً
ضلُّواthey strayed بلrather الغيرُothers فيin الأَحْوالِcircumstances مقْدُورُsubject to decree
ضلُّوا بل الغيرُ في الأَحْوالِ مقْدُورُ
What ails a people who see power in others?
What is with a people who you see attributing might to others?
They have strayed; rather, others in every state are subject to decree.
Rather, it is others who are controlled in circumstances.
سُقماًsickness upon them لقدindeed عَبَدواthey worshipped الأَغْيارَothers فانْقَطَعواso they were cut off
سُقماً لقد عَبَدوا الأَغْيارَ فانْقَطَعوا
وسعْيُand the striving منone who أَخلَصَwas sincere التَّوحيدَaffirming divine oneness مَشْكُورُappreciated
وسعْيُ من أَخلَصَ التَّوحيدَ مَشْكُورُ
May sickness be theirs! They worshipped others and were cut off.
Indeed, they worshipped others, so they were cut off.
And the striving of one sincere in affirming divine oneness is appreciated.
And the effort of one who sincerely devotes to God's oneness is appreciated.
مضَوْاthey went on يَرومونَthey seek أَمراًan aim فيthrough تحيُّلِهِمْtheir scheming
مضَوْا يَرومونَ أَمراً في تحيُّلِهِمْ
مضَوْاthey went on وحزبُهُمُand their faction بالصَّدِّby rebuff مقْهُورُsubdued
مضَوْا وحزبُهُمُ بالصَّدِّ مقْهُورُ
They went on seeking an aim through their scheming.
They went ahead scheming in their plotting,
They went on, their faction crushed by rebuff.
but they went ahead while their party is subdued by firmness.
واسْتَرشَقواand they deemed clever رأيَهُمْtheir judgment بالزَّعمِthrough presumption إذْwhen مَكَرواthey schemed
واسْتَرشَقوا رأيَهُمْ بالزَّعمِ إذْ مَكَروا
وكلُّهمand all of them تحتbeneath طيِّfolds القهرِoverpowering might ممكُورُoutwitted
وكلُّهم تحت طيِّ القهرِ ممكُورُ
And in their presumption they deemed their judgment clever as they schemed.
They spread their opinion through false claims when they schemed,
And all of them, beneath the folds of overpowering might, are outwitted.
yet all of them are folded under the cloak of subjugation.
دعَهُمْleave them وماand what انتَحَلوهُthey falsely claimed it واقْصِهِمْand banish them أَبداًforever
دعَهُمْ وما انتَحَلوهُ واقْصِهِمْ أَبداً
ماnot أَنْتَyou فيin قربِهِمْtheir proximity ياO خِلُّdear friend مغْدُورُbetrayed
ما أَنْتَ في قربِهِمْ يا خِلُّ مغْدُورُ
Leave them and what they have falsely claimed; banish them forever.
Leave them and what they falsely claim, and turn away from them forever.
You are not betrayed in their company, dear friend.
You are not close to them, O glorious master.
ولاand do not تخفْfear زورَهُمْtheir falsehood نمْsleep بالأَمانِin safety فماfor whatever
ولا تخفْ زورَهُمْ نمْ بالأَمانِ فما
طَوَوْاthey folded عليهaround it الخَفاياsecrets كلُّهُall of it زُورُfalsehood
طَوَوْا عليه الخَفايا كلُّهُ زُورُ
And do not fear their falsehood; sleep in safety, for whatever
Do not fear their falsehood, rather sleep in peace, for
they have wrapped in secrets is all falsehood.
they contrived over it deceptions - all of it false.
حزبٌa faction كَسيرٌbroken أَذلَّabased الخِزْيُdisgrace ناصِرَهُits champion
حزبٌ كَسيرٌ أَذلَّ الخِزْيُ ناصِرَهُ
وأنتَand you باللهِthrough God والمُخْتارِand the Chosen One منْصُورُgranted victory
وأنتَ باللهِ والمُخْتارِ منْصُورُ
A broken faction: disgrace has abased its champion.
A defeated party - disgrace supports its partisans,
And you are granted victory through God and the Chosen One.
while you, by God and the Chosen One, are victorious.
تلكَthat البِشارَةُglad tiding عنfrom رُوحِspirit النَّبيِّthe Prophet أَتتْcame
تلكَ البِشارَةُ عن رُوحِ النَّبيِّ أَتتْ
فوعدُهُso his promise صادِقٌtrue والقولُand the word مبرُورُhonored
فوعدُهُ صادِقٌ والقولُ مبرُورُ
That glad tiding came from the Prophet's spirit.
That is the good news from the soul of the Prophet that came,
So his promise is true, and the word is honored.
so his promise is true, and the word is carried out.
والحاسِدونَand the envious بخِزْيٍin disgrace لاnot يُفارِقُهُمْleaves them
والحاسِدونَ بخِزْيٍ لا يُفارِقُهُمْ
علىin المذلَّةِhumiliation حتَّىuntil يُنْفَخَis blown الصُّورُthe Trumpet
على المذلَّةِ حتَّى يُنْفَخَ الصُّورُ
And the envious are in disgrace that never leaves them,
The envious ones will not be separated from disgrace
in humiliation until the Trumpet is blown.
until the trumpet is blown.
ورُكنُهُمْand their stronghold كيفhowever همُّواthey planned بائِدٌperishing خَرِبٌruined
ورُكنُهُمْ كيف همُّوا بائِدٌ خَرِبٌ
وأنتَand you ركنُكَyour stronghold بالتَّوفيقِthrough divine favor مَعْمُورُbuilt up
وأنتَ ركنُكَ بالتَّوفيقِ مَعْمُورُ
And their stronghold, whatever they plan, is perishing and ruined.
Their pillar - how their desire to annihilate it failed - is in ruins,
And you—your stronghold is built up through divine favor.
while your pillar, by God's support, is inhabited.
باتواthey spent the night علىin ظُلُماتٍdarkness منfrom وَساوِسِهمtheir whispering doubts
باتوا على ظُلُماتٍ من وَساوِسِهم
نعمyes ضَجيعُbedfellow الدَّعاوىpretensions ماnot لهُhe has نُورُlight
نعم ضَجيعُ الدَّعاوى ما لهُ نُورُ
They spent the night in darkness from their whispering doubts.
They slept in the darkness of their delusions.
Yes, the bedfellow of pretensions has no light.
Yes, the bedmate of false claims has no light for it.
بغَوْاthey rebelled علىagainst المُصْطَفىthe Chosen One أَمثالُهُمْtheir like وعَدَوْاand they transgressed
بغَوْا على المُصْطَفى أَمثالُهُمْ وعَدَوْا
فنابَهُمْso there befell them بعدَafter طولِlength الحبْلِthe rope تدْميرُdestruction
فنابَهُمْ بعدَ طولِ الحبْلِ تدْميرُ
Their like rebelled against the Chosen One and transgressed.
They harbored enmity against the Chosen One like themselves and were hostile,
So destruction befell them after the rope had long been let out.
but after the rope was long, it destroyed them.
وأَيَّدَand strengthened اللهُGod رغمَdespite الكُلِّeveryone مظهَرَهُhis manifestation
وأَيَّدَ اللهُ رغمَ الكُلِّ مظهَرَهُ
بلىindeed وصَمْصامُهُand his keen sword فيin الكونِcreation مشْهُورُdrawn
بلى وصَمْصامُهُ في الكونِ مشْهُورُ
And God upheld his manifestation, despite them all.
And God supported the manifestation of His Chosen against all,
Indeed, his keen sword is drawn throughout creation.
indeed, his sharp sword in the universe is well known.
فلازِمِso keep to الذِّكرَremembrance واتركْand leave غَوْشَclamor صائحِهِمْtheir shouter
فلازِمِ الذِّكرَ واتركْ غَوْشَ صائحِهِمْ
فذاكِرُfor one who remembers اللهِGod بالخَيْراتِwith blessings مَغْمُورُflooded
فذاكِرُ اللهِ بالخَيْراتِ مَغْمُورُ
So persist in remembrance, and leave their shouter's clamor.
So, adhere to remembrance and leave the nonsense of their shouting,
For one who remembers God is flooded with blessings.
for the rememberer of God is showered with good things.
وإنand if غفَلْتَyou grew heedless فعُدْthen return للذِّكْرِto remembrance مبتَهِجاًjoyfully
وإن غفَلْتَ فعُدْ للذِّكْرِ مبتَهِجاً
ذَنْبُsin المُحِبِّthe lover معamong الأَحْبابِthe beloved ones مغْفُورُforgiven
ذَنْبُ المُحِبِّ مع الأَحْبابِ مغْفُورُ
And if you grow heedless, return joyfully to remembrance.
If you are heedless, return to remembrance joyfully,
The lover's sin is forgiven among the beloved.
for the sins of a lover are forgiven with loved ones.
قُلوبُhearts أَعدائِكَyour enemies البُهْتانُslander أَقلقَهاhas troubled them
قُلوبُ أَعدائِكَ البُهْتانُ أَقلقَها
وأنتَand you قلبُكَyour heart بالإِيمانِin faith مَسْرُورُgladdened
وأنتَ قلبُكَ بالإِيمانِ مَسْرُورُ
Slander has troubled the hearts of your enemies.
The confused hearts of your enemies were disturbed,
And you—your heart rejoices in faith.
while your heart is content with faith.
خذْgain بانْكِسارِكَthrough your brokenness للرَّحمنِto the All-Merciful مقرَبَةًnearness
خذْ بانْكِسارِكَ للرَّحمنِ مقرَبَةً
ذُوone possessing الانْكِسارِbrokenness ببابِat the door اللهِGod مجْبُورُmended
ذُو الانْكِسارِ ببابِ اللهِ مجْبُورُ
Gain nearness to the All-Merciful through your brokenness.
Take humility to the Merciful as a means of nearness -
The broken one is mended at God's door.
the name of God, with a fathah on the baa, is in the genitive case.
ولمand did not يفُتْelude ذاone possessing انْكِسارٍbrokenness فيضُoverflowing bounty بارِئِهِhis Maker
ولم يفُتْ ذا انْكِسارٍ فيضُ بارِئِهِ
ولمand did not يفُزْwin بالإِحْسانِgracious favor مَغْرُورُa self-deluded one
ولم يفُزْ بالإِحْسانِ مَغْرُورُ
And his Maker's bounty has never passed a broken one by.
Do not neglect decorating the home of your heart
And no self-deluded one has won gracious favor.
even if a people whose only concern is houses are destroyed.
وامْشِand walk المُطَيْطاءَwith a swagger للدُّنياtoward this world فقِسْمَتُهاfor its allotted share
وامْشِ المُطَيْطاءَ للدُّنيا فقِسْمَتُها
لاno بدَّescape تأتيit comes فقلْso say ياO أَهلَهاits people طِيرواfly away
لا بدَّ تأتي فقلْ يا أَهلَها طِيروا
And swagger toward this world, for its allotted share
And take your companions to the Master quickly,
is bound to come; so say, 'O its people, fly away!'
and say to them, whenever the journey is good, "Let's go."
وابنِand build التَّواضُعَhumility حصناًa fortress واصْطَنِعْهُand adopt it يداًa helping hand
وابنِ التَّواضُعَ حصناً واصْطَنِعْهُ يداً
اسمُname الإِلهِGod بباءِthrough the letter bāʾ الكسرِbrokenness مجْرُورُin the genitive
اسمُ الإِلهِ بباءِ الكسرِ مجْرُورُ
And build humility into a fortress, and adopt it as a helping hand.
For our sun is rising in the horizons of the universe -
God's name takes the genitive through the bāʾ of brokenness.
the blind are not harmed when it shines on them.
ودارُand the abode قلبِكَyour heart لاdo not تهمِلْneglect عِمارَتَهاits upkeep
ودارُ قلبِكَ لا تهمِلْ عِمارَتَها
وإنْand even if تَهالَكَwore themselves out قومٌa people همُّهاtheir concern الُّدورُhouses
وإنْ تَهالَكَ قومٌ همُّها الُّدورُ
And do not neglect the upkeep of your heart's abode,
We have hearts that soar to the Creator,
even if people whose concern is houses wear themselves out.
inscribed on them is the line of love of God.
وخذْand take رِفاقَكَyour companions للمولىto the Lord علىin عَجَلٍhaste
وخذْ رِفاقَكَ للمولى على عَجَلٍ
وقلْand say لهُمْto them كلَّماwhenever طابَbecame pleasant السُّرىnight travel سِيرواjourney on
وقلْ لهُمْ كلَّما طابَ السُّرى سِيروا
And take your companions to the Lord in haste.
Our righteousness blossoms with various acts of righteousness,
And tell them, whenever night travel is sweet, 'Journey on!'
and our sea overflows with the disciplines of knowledge.
فشمسُناfor our sun فيin فَجاجِwide pathways الكَوْنِcreation طالِعَةًrising
فشمسُنا في فَجاجِ الكَوْنِ طالِعَةً
ماwhat ضرَّهاharmed it حينَwhen تَعْمىgo blind عِنْدَهاbefore it العُورُthe one-eyed
ما ضرَّها حينَ تَعْمى عِنْدَها العُورُ
For our sun is rising in the wide pathways of creation.
The Shaykh of the Camels has elevated our pillar,
What harm does it suffer when the one-eyed go blind before it?
our watering place in love is restricted to him.
لناwe have قُلوبٌhearts إلىtoward الخَلاَّقِthe Creator طائرَةًflying
لنا قُلوبٌ إلى الخَلاَّقِ طائرَةً
برِقِّهاon their parchment سطرُa line حُبِّlove اللهِGod مَسْطُورُinscribed
برِقِّها سطرُ حُبِّ اللهِ مَسْطُورُ
We have hearts flying toward the Creator.
We were intoxicated with a cup whose drink causes no aftermath,
On their parchment, a line of love for God is inscribed.
so we tasted it until the Resurrection drunk.
وبرُّناand our land بصُنوفِwith varieties البرِّgoodness مزدَهِرٌflourishing
وبرُّنا بصُنوفِ البرِّ مزدَهِرٌ
وبحرُناand our sea بفُنونِwith the arts العلمِknowledge مَسْجُورُfilled
وبحرُنا بفُنونِ العلمِ مَسْجُورُ
And our land blossoms with varieties of goodness.
From the Bearer of Good News, the father of Zahra, our master -
And our sea is filled with the arts of knowledge.
through this lofty rank we have glad tidings.
شيخُthe Shaykh البَطائِحِal-Bata'ih قدindeed أَعلىraised high دِعامَتَناour pillar
شيخُ البَطائِحِ قد أَعلى دِعامَتَنا
عليهto him مَشربُناour wellspring فيin الحُبِّlove مَقْصُورُconfined
عليه مَشربُنا في الحُبِّ مَقْصُورُ
The Shaykh of al-Bata'ih has raised our pillar high.
No criticizing from the world criticizes us,
Our wellspring in love is confined to him.
even if the hearts of the envious are pierced with criticism.
لقدindeed سكِرْناwe became drunk بكأْسٍfrom a cup لاno عَصيرَpressed juice بهin it
لقد سكِرْنا بكأْسٍ لا عَصيرَ به
فذَوْقُناso our taste منهfrom it حتَّىuntil الحشرِthe Gathering مَخْمُورُintoxicated
فذَوْقُنا منه حتَّى الحشرِ مَخْمُورُ
Indeed, we have grown drunk from a cup containing no juice.
An owl wept for us amidst the riders of the darkness,
So our taste remains drunk on it until the Gathering.
so our clothes were stained with clay for God.
منfrom البشيرِthe Bringer of Glad Tidings أَبيfather of الزَّهراءِal-Zahra سيِّدِناour master
من البشيرِ أَبي الزَّهراءِ سيِّدِنا
لناto us برفْعَةُof the elevation هذاthis الشَّأْنِstation تَبْشيرُglad tidings
لنا برفْعَةُ هذا الشَّأْنِ تَبْشيرُ
From the Bringer of Glad Tidings, father of al-Zahra, our master,
We are the party of truth that was intended,
come glad tidings to us of the elevation of this station.
and its clear verse in the Book of Victory is well known.
ولاand not نَقيرٌa speck منfrom الدُّنياthis world يُناقِرُناnags at us
ولا نَقيرٌ من الدُّنيا يُناقِرُنا
قلباًat heart وإنْand even if طمَّoverflowed للحُسَّادِfor the envious تَنْقيرُcarping
قلباً وإنْ طمَّ للحُسَّادِ تَنْقيرُ
And not a speck of this world nags at us
The way of the Prophet is our state and gnosis now -
at heart, though the envious ones' carping overflows.
in this journey there is no changing or altering.
بكتْwept لناfor us بينَamong رُكْبانِriders الدُّجىnight-darkness مُقَلٌeyes
بكتْ لنا بينَ رُكْبانِ الدُّجى مُقَلٌ
فثوبُناso our garment وَجَلاًin fear للهِbefore God ممْطُورُrained upon
فثوبُنا وَجَلاً للهِ ممْطُورُ
Eyes wept for us among the riders of the night.
The one sick with desire came seeking to humiliate us -
So our garment is rain-drenched in fear of God.
the doctor erred, and the remedies betrayed him.
ونحنُand we طائِفَةُthe company الحقِّtruth التيwhich قُصِدَتْwas intended
ونحنُ طائِفَةُ الحقِّ التي قُصِدَتْ
والنَّصُّand the text فيهاconcerning it لأَهلِto the people الذَّوْقِspiritual taste مَشْهُورُwell known
والنَّصُّ فيها لأَهلِ الذَّوْقِ مَشْهُورُ
And we are the company of truth that was intended.
If the critic examined the lights of our manifestation,
And the text concerning it is well known to people of spiritual taste.
healing rains would turn him back from our vast terrains.
طورُway النَّبيِّthe Prophet بِناin us حالاًas a spiritual state ومعرِفَةًand gnosis
طورُ النَّبيِّ بِنا حالاً ومعرِفَةً
ماno فيهin it فيon السَّيْرِthe journey تبْديلٌalteration وتَغْييرُand change
ما فيه في السَّيْرِ تبْديلٌ وتَغْييرُ
The Prophet's way is in us, in state and gnosis;
If we stayed in ornamented gardens,
there is no alteration or change in it on the journey.
the houris would stand sweeping our thresholds.
أَتىcame مَريضُone sick الهَوىdesire يسعَىstriving لذِلَّتِناfor our humiliation
أَتى مَريضُ الهَوى يسعَى لذِلَّتِنا
ضلَّwent astray الطَّبيبُthe physician وخانَتْهُand betrayed him العَقاقيرُmedicines
ضلَّ الطَّبيبُ وخانَتْهُ العَقاقيرُ
One sick with desire came, seeking our humiliation.
We have turned our aspirations away from the universes,
The physician went astray, and the medicines betrayed him.
and they have no concern or influence over us.
لوif أَنصَفَacted fairly المُجْتَليthe beholder أَنوارَlights مظهَرِناour manifestation
لو أَنصَفَ المُجْتَلي أَنوارَ مظهَرِنا
لنابَهُit would have befallen him منfrom حِماناour sanctuary الرَّحبِspacious تَطْهيرُpurification
لنابَهُ من حِمانا الرَّحبِ تَطْهيرُ
Had the one beholding the lights of our manifestation been fair,
The light of our dawn disturbed the people -
purification would have come to him from our spacious sanctuary.
it makes bats go to sleep when you shed light!
ولوand if أَقمْناwe dwelt بجَنَّاتٍin gardens مزخْرَفَةٍadorned
ولو أَقمْنا بجَنَّاتٍ مزخْرَفَةٍ
لقامَwould rise يكْنِسُsweeping فيat أَعْتابِناour thresholds الحُورُthe houris
لقامَ يكْنِسُ في أَعْتابِنا الحُورُ
And had we dwelt in adorned gardens,
We seek none but our Master, so say to them:
the houris would have risen to sweep at our thresholds.
"Die while your qiblah is coins!"
إنَّاindeed we لوَيْناturned عنِaway from الأَكْوانِcreated worlds مُقْلَتَناour eye
إنَّا لوَيْنا عنِ الأَكْوانِ مُقْلَتَنا
وماand not لهاfor them عندَناwith us همٌّconcern وتأثيرُand influence
وما لها عندَنا همٌّ وتأثيرُ
Indeed, we have turned our eye away from created worlds.
We flew with the wings of gnosis outspread,
And they neither concern nor influence us.
while a sparrow stirs them up with claims.
قدindeed أَزْعَجَdisturbed القومَthose people منَّاfrom us نورُlight طالِعِناour rising star
قد أَزْعَجَ القومَ منَّا نورُ طالِعِنا
يُعْشيblinds الخَفافيشَthe bats لوif حقَّقْتَyou discerned the truth تَنْويرُillumination
يُعْشي الخَفافيشَ لو حقَّقْتَ تَنْويرُ
Indeed, the light of our rising star has disturbed those people.
Our Lord singled us out with support - He is its helper,
Illumination blinds the bats, if you discern the truth.
while He breaks them as a group with abandonment.
ماnot قصدُناour aim غيرَother than مولاناour Lord فقلْso say لهُمُto them
ما قصدُنا غيرَ مولانا فقلْ لهُمُ
موتواdie وقِبْلَتُكُمْand your direction of prayer وهيand it is الدَّنانيرُdinars
موتوا وقِبْلَتُكُمْ وهي الدَّنانيرُ
Our aim is none but our Lord; so tell them:
For every rank there is a secret that upholds it,
Die, you and your qibla—the dinars!
and affairs are precisely measured in God's unseen realm.
طِرْناwe flew بأَجنِحَةِon wings العِرْفانِgnosis مفرَدَةًset apart
طِرْنا بأَجنِحَةِ العِرْفانِ مفرَدَةً
وراحَand set about يُنْهِضُهُمْlifting them بالزَّعمِthrough pretensions عُصْفورُa sparrow
وراحَ يُنْهِضُهُمْ بالزَّعمِ عُصْفورُ
We flew on wings of gnosis, set apart;
Their dreams raved due to their evil conduct -
and a sparrow set about lifting them through pretensions.
their interpretation indicates their rejection.
وفَرْدُناand our lone one ربٌّهُhis Lord بالعونِwith aid ناصِرُهُhis helper
وفَرْدُنا ربٌّهُ بالعونِ ناصِرُهُ
وجمعُهُمْand their multitude فيهwithin it بالخِذْلانِthrough abandonment تَكْسيرُshattering
وجمعُهُمْ فيه بالخِذْلانِ تَكْسيرُ
And our lone one—his Lord supports him with aid.
The sign of truth never leaves our curriculum,
And their multitude is shattered within by abandonment.
for its symbol, in the Book of Victory, is explained.
لكلِّfor every منزِلَةٍstation سِرٌّa secret يقومُsustains بهاit
لكلِّ منزِلَةٍ سِرٌّ يقومُ بها
وللشُؤُنِand for affairs بغيْبِin the unseen اللهِGod تَقْديرُan ordained measure
وللشُؤُنِ بغيْبِ اللهِ تَقْديرُ
Each station has a secret that sustains it.
Commit to our protection, and do not leave our methods,
And affairs have their ordained measure in God's unseen.
for you, by God, are victorious and protected.
أَحْلامُهُمْtheir dreams سَفِهَتْbecame foolish منfrom سوءِevil سيرَتِهِمْtheir conduct
أَحْلامُهُمْ سَفِهَتْ من سوءِ سيرَتِهِمْ
لهاfor them بمضْمونِهاthrough their content المَرْدودِrejected تَعْبيرُan interpretation
لها بمضْمونِها المَرْدودِ تَعْبيرُ
Their dreams became foolish through their evil conduct.
There is an interpretation for them in their rejected content.
وآيةُand the sign الحقِّtruth منfrom مِنْهاجِناour way أَبداًforever
وآيةُ الحقِّ من مِنْهاجِنا أَبداً
لرَمْزِهاfor its symbol فيin كتابِthe book النَّصرِvictory تَفْسيرُan explanation
لرَمْزِها في كتابِ النَّصرِ تَفْسيرُ
And the sign of truth, forever part of our path—
its symbol has an explanation in the book of victory.
إِلزَمْkeep to حِماناour sanctuary ولاand do not تتركْabandon مَناهِجَناour ways
إِلزَمْ حِمانا ولا تتركْ مَناهِجَنا
وأنتَand you باللهِthrough God منصورٌgranted victory ومَسْتُورُand sheltered
وأنتَ باللهِ منصورٌ ومَسْتُورُ
Keep to our sanctuary, and do not abandon our ways.
And through God you are granted victory and shielded.
