    Threads have come loose from the daisies,

    When the breeze blew from the land of Salma.

    And men fell stricken because of it, mad with love,

    The day it gave hearts sorrow upon sorrow.

    ما اسْتَطاعوا من بعدِ ما مسَّ كتْمَا

    They revealed their secret because of a troubling state;

    They could not conceal it after what had befallen them.

    علَّمتْ هاطِلَ السَّحائِبِ سجْمَا

    And tears flowed from them out of passionate love;

    They taught the clouds' downpour how to stream.

    Ah, by my life, I perished, while the people lay stricken,

    As though I alone had committed a crime.

    By the meanings that my heart enfolded,

    I swear an oath that shook a part of my heart:

    I heeded neither the slanderer nor the rebuke of a schemer

    Who went on unjustly telling strange tales about me.

    And I spent my time in sincerity toward them,

    And severed my heart from this and that.

    And with my ecstasy I tore the veil of the nights,

    And rent the days, day after day.

    And I donned reverence as a cloak, while my secret

    Sought them out and donned humility there.

    ربِّ زِدْني بسيرَةِ الحِبِّ عِلمَا

    They taught me the knowledge of submission before them;

    My Lord, increase my knowledge of the beloved's way.
