They forsook us—what a people they forsook!

And joined the ranks of the riders of the lower selves.

And saw our cloak as threadbare,

And became entwined with wearers of fine fabrics.

    ليتَهُمْ إذْ سَلَكُوا ما سَلَكُوا

    They followed delusion according to their opinions;

If only, when they took that path, they had not!

    صُحِّحَ النَّوعُ لها المُشْتَبِكُ

    Souls of their own kind mingled with them;

    Their interwoven kinship was confirmed.

They did not understand us because of a clear difference,

And saw our path, then turned aside.

We are signs of guidance's inner meanings,

And among created beings, responsibility rests upon us.

We are God's secret in this creation,

And in every secret we have a share.

Whoever's heart the hand of divine aid has touched

Is occupied with us, wholly absorbed.

And whoever fought us was confounded by us,

Just as the clear-sighted, perceptive one said.

The peoples professed their Lord's oneness in words,

Yet they saw another and, in ignorance, ascribed partners to Him.

Whoever sees others besides God in their actions

Is, without doubt, far removed—a polytheist.

    فليَدُرْ كيفَ أُديرَ الفَلَكُ

    We have believed in the One who fashioned us;

So let the celestial sphere turn however it is turned.

Our shaykh, the succor-giver al-Rifa‘i, whose

Path is the essence of guidance and devotion,

Stood in Taha's stead, then came to us as a guide

To a path where the darkness grew radiant.

So we followed him in his footsteps, and already

The bindings had been lifted from the hollow sole of our guidance.

And upon the crowns of the heights, our assembly

Is entwined with the sultans of the sanctuary.

We worship God, and do not worship those

Whom their time will surely destroy, or who have already perished.

    Gilded speech seared their eyes,

So they went blind and were beguiled—nay, they were exposed.

Control in defiance of divine decree was claimed

By eyes with blindness enmeshed within them.

But for divine decree, their helplessness with their sandal

Would be plain if its straps were severed.

My Lord's dominion—He is its master,

Despite those who have been ruled or have ruled.

    جلَّ بارِينا القَديمُ المَلِكُ

    God's beginningless eternity is exalted above created existence;

Exalted is our Maker, the Eternal King.
